I'm currently at work, and since 4:30pm two of our legacy servers had problems (legacy as in late 70s). Somehow, an application failure became a network problem, and I'm here with some other engineers that are trying to ice skate uphill.
...I need a new job. |

For the most part, that's my deal as well. I don't mind where I work, and my benefits are good. I just wish I got paid more...a lot more... |

I wish I didn't have moments where I have to spend 15+ hours at work because of an issue that is completely not my problem. |

The problem is perception and byzantine company politics.
It is a very old system that very few people know and understand. In not knowing the system, System Engineers are quick to blame the network in why the system is failing.
To give you an idea on how old the system is, the operating system that is has was written by HP, and TCP/IP protocols just stopped being theoretical. Also, only one or two people truly understand why and how the server works fully.
Now with this in mind, I could not leave because if I did, then network services would promptly be blamed for any issue on the server, no progress would be made, and the next day we would be crucified faster than Sparticus. Also incidentally, one of the junior network engineers decided to jump the gun, and think that it was a cabling or switch issue. The problem he exacberated by futzing with the cables, and obfuscated the issue by forgetting which ports they were on originally (never mind the odds of an ethernet cable arbitraly failing is the same odds of finding bacon in Iran).
Now this vindicated the System Engineers in it's perpetual assumption that the network is broken, and took 4 hours to convince them otherwise. Also the next day because of the said engineer's actions, the System Engineers can pose resonable doubt about the Network, and cause my VP to lose half his quarterly bonus (these systems were processing about 15 million dollars worth of batch files, mainly from floral companies).
Sorry if I provided to much information, but I needed to vent a little. I also have the overwhelming urge to go to an Monastary, and be a Zen Buddhist monk for a few years... |
