I have this theory (as Reverend can tell you), that little kids tend to ruin good things once they get their grubby little hands on them. Case in point, Pokemon. Pokemon used to be a pretty cool game, back in the day when it first came out on GameBoy. Once all the little kids started discovering it though, it started to get stupid. They added a near infinite supply of new Pokemon, and started to market Pokemon EVERYTHING, because they saw that parents were going out of their way to buy whatever it was their kid wanted. I saw the same thing happening to Dragon Ball Z. The other problem is that no one wants to associate themselves with something that's for "little kids", so it ruins it even more.

But the biggest outrage I have seen was when I was strolling along in Barnes and Noble with Rev. when I saw Lord Of The Rings characters on teen magazines, because they are "hot"! Ok, I can understand that they want to make LOTR appeal to other audiences, but is this really the way to do it? Do you really want 15 year old girls obsessed with the Backstreet Boys and nsync to go to movie theatres to see LOTR just because "Legolas and Frodo are cute"? Shouldn't you go LOTR becuase you are truly into such types of movies or because you're interested in seeing a good movie? I don't know, I see something wrong with this.

Sorry if I may have offended anyone.

So I should stop mass marketing my AZVegeta beefcake calendar?

To a point, I agree with Saleb. We are mass marketing culture TO them, but not necessarily INTO them. A few years down the road, the Pokemon and DBZ fans of today will throw it aside as being childish, and they'll move onto other things. There's nothing wrong with moving on, but there's just something different about it in this sense, I just can't put my finger on it. I guess it's like they're into all these cool things because it's the cool thing to be into. It's a fad, a trend. One of the negative ramifications for true fans is the sky-rocketed prices that we have to suffer because of "fads". When the Pokemon CCG came out (which was simple, but a good game), it was reasonably priced until kids ate it up, and stores were charging nearly $10 a pack. It's worse than smoking! I worked in a toy store during this time, and watched parents come in and drop hundreds of dollars on Pokemon cards and such. I remember hearing about one parent who bought $1800 worth of cards! The shame of all of this was that these kids didn't even play the game, and will most likely toss their cards aside when they decided that Pokemon isn't cool enough anymore.

I agree completely with Shino that we should hope this doesn't happen to PO. It's better to keep real, lifetime fans than little kids who have no sense of retaining loyalty.

And as for Saleb thinking that "that little blonde elf dude is a hottie", that's cool. If you're at PO at this point, that obviously means that you have a true appreciation for the wonders of fantasy and sci-fi, and it's ok to think that (whoever) is a hottie. I don't think there's one guy who would tell you that Arwen (Liv Tyler) wasn't a hottie, even if she was just added as fan service. ;-P

But anyway, I'm gonna be late for class. Later...

Umm, I will be glad to break your record and tell you Arwen was a DOG! Compared to what you think of when you read the book Liv Tyler was the WORST choice for the job.

Let the slings and arrows fall where they may.

All's I gotta say is that I went to see the first movie only knowing a couple of the actors. I went because of the books.

Eye candy was, of course, and added bonus. And I'd be happy to have Legolas' children as long as it came with a free pair of Elvish boots!

OK, so AZVegeta disagrees. Actually, I was a big hesitant to add that Arwen comment in the first place, for fear that someone would inevitably disagree, which perfectly cool. Just another example of my unavoidable power of putting my foot in my mouth. Sorry guys...

I don't care what you say Az... Liv Tyler is SOOOO a hottie!

I would totally have a litter of that dog's babies!

But I can understand the whole thing about her not being like she was in the book. I felt the same way about Natalie Portman in Where the Heart Is... And she is also still very much a hottie! Wink
