Nervous. Super nervous. Toooo nervous. Why?

Well, because. I'm entering a writing competition tommorrow, and also, in a few days auditioning for a solo.

I'm being forced to by a guy in my homeroom. Black-mail. -.-;; Ick. Personally, I believe I can't sing at all, though Keerin and Eddie (guys in home room) and Musashi as well insist I can. Just great.

If I get this solo, I get a part in the talent show, and we have had a girl be talked into a small record deal from this talent show...

But i'm jumpy and super nervous...-.- So...Dunno.

And if I get the solo, all the ATL POers have to promise to come see me! j/k

Either way, I guess the point here, is that, I needed a few ways to calm myself down, and I figured this is as good a place as any to get advice.

So far, i've been taking warm baths and doing choral warm ups. Constantly.

Any ideas?

Yes Katana, I think you sing extremely well. I'm sorry if it causes you stress and nervousness, but you really do have a great talent. Katana gave me permission so I'm going to post the WAV files she sent me of her singing. You guys tell her I'm not making this up!

Katana - Adam's Song
Katana - Twilight
Katana - Me

Anyway, I think you sing really well, thanks for letting me hear these. I'm sure everyone else will agree. *Prepares to Ouch Knife Head Vaporize those who do not.* JK!

As for ways to calm down when you're nervous...I'm probably not the best person to ask about that. I have an extreme fear of getting up in front of people and have yet to find a way to remedy it. As long as you're well-prepared you'll be fine though. Remember, everyone else who's up there is probably just as nervous as you are, so don't sweat it.

Good luck Kat! I know you'll do great!

Okay. This is probably the only time I'm going to do this, so forgive me.
Katana, I'm a Vocal Performance Major, and I've been singing since I was 5 and I've taken 4 years of Classical Voice lessons so... I'm going to assume that I know what I'm talking about whenit comes to singing. That said, I have a few things to say to you:

1.You DO have a good voice. I know you probably don't think so, but that's okay. Your voice is still growing so you won't get used to it for quite some time. That's normal, though. Most people's voices don't really settle until they're in their early 20s. I know it sucks.

2. Find your OWN voice. Remember that singing is a personal expression, even if you aren't singing your own words. Trust your voice. It won't lead you wrong.

3. Confidence. It's key. Have faith.

4. Support. You know those muscles that feel sore after doing a lot of sit ups? Those are support muscles. Whenever you sing engage them. You'll be AMAZED how much easier things are.

5. Always think about going SHARP. It's ALWAYS better to go sharp than flat. And I'm not saying that I think you have terrible pitch (quite the opposite), but sometimes it just helps.

I guess that's all I'm gonna say. Sorry I went into "Crazy Tenor" mode. I just want to help out. Audition. You might be surprized. Good luck, Katana! You'll do great!

Breath support is *very* important, and somthing I mess up on. Usually, it's because i'm singing to myself, and when you're half-whispering, you can't back a note with much breath. My chorus teacher always said "It's easier to sing loud than to sing quiet. Your voice should be like a very obnoxious person, always loud and in my face."

Those wavs are a little flat, because, I have not rehearsed any of the songs. Those were just me singing because I was bored...^^;; So *shrug*.

Crazy tenor mode? Does that mean I get a Crazy Alto Mode? lol

And as for chorus class...all I gotta say is...that chair hurts my hips when I have to sit on the edge of it.

But at any rate...I think my poetry will do well in the writing contest.

Here is a good relaxation technique. I use it a lot and it really helped me in ballet to increase my flexibility believe it or not. It is the yoga death pose. Here is what you do.

Turn the lights off so that they are not glaring in your eyes and make sure you are in a quiet room. Some people like to have soft music in the background but I personally find it distracting when relaxing muscles, so it all depends on how the music affects you personally.

Now lie down on the ground (you can use a towel or mat if you wish. Again, a matter of preference). Let your legs and arms fall to a comfortable distance apart (as if you were lying in bed on your back). Relax your mind. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. Again.

Feel your toes relaxing, your feet, your ankes, your calves, your thighs. Take your time. This isn't a contest. Feel the tension leaving each body part individually. Then your fingers, your hands, your wrists, your arms.

Next, feel your spine bleed into the floor as you relax each individual backbone. Relax your abdomine, your chest, your neck, your jaw, pallet, tongue, cheeks, eyes, forehead, the scalp. Feel your mind clear and simply relax here. Think of NOTHING and enjoy the peace you have obtained. Hold this pose as long as necessary and return to it as often as you need to.

And remember, don't shoot up from this pose! You should follow the same steps as previously stated to regain function of your body by first stretching and moving your toes.... etc.

Sorry this tooks so long to explain but it is GOOOD STUFF... so enjoy!

That reminds me of a technique where when your stressed, you tense up every part of your body, starting from your toes and going to your head...and then relax it...starting from your head and going to your toes.
