I have not laughed harder at a manga since...ever. I can't recommend this highly enough. The story is based around an immature teacher and five or six of her students. They stories are arranged in four panel up to down segments, much like the cartoons in the sunday paper. If all the sunday comics in japan are half this funny, I'm subscribing to the Tokyo Shimbun. |

Either way, Azumanga Daioh is a laughing-out-loud riot. It's highly recommended, and actually has been translated (two volumes so far) by ADV Manga here in the states. Your bookstore chain-type people should have it.

Yomi does seem to have an inordinate amount of patience. Then again, it could just be the combination of Osaka, Tomo, and Yukari's influences all cancel each other out...
It's Chiyo-chan that I worry the most about, though... especially if any of Osaka's dreams about her come true. |

Yomi is what Wayne Campbell would designate a literary "sorbet", the tame element in a otherwise insane environment so that you can cleanse your comedy palate every few strips. Other than her obsession with her weight (which seems a common theme in schoolgirl dramedies) and a propensity to be a bit mean-spirited, Yomi's only other notable trait is that she hasn't ditched Tomo yet.
Osaka is a close second in favoite characters. She's just....I dunno, CUTE. And not in the perverted fanboy I'D HIT IT sort of way, but with this innocent, hapless, not-really-clueless-just-a-fish-out-of-water manner. |
