So, i just got back from my little sister's OM (Odyssey of the Mind) competition, and i was wondering if anyone here had ever heard of it, and/or actually competed on a team?
Basically, OM is a big creative, problem solving competition where you get into teams of no more than 7 (most people form these teams with school, however, you can form an OM team through a YMCA or other club.). You are given a choice of long term problems, that are presented in the form of a skit that is written and performed by the team. These problems have specific requirements and rules that you must follow. Also, you are given a budget (usually between $100-$150) and you are not allowed to have outisde assistance, or the assistance of adults while creating your props and scenery. The second part of OM is spontaneous, where you are given a question and in a short period of time (usually only a few minutes) you try to give as many "creative" answers as possible, and according to the creativity of your answers, you collect points. At the end of both of these parts, your score is added up and the team with the highest scores place.
In OM, there are 3 different competitions you can be in - Regionals (there are normally a few per state, and these are just so all the teams can compete) Then, if you place in this competition (placing depends on the number of entries per division) you can move on to the State competition. If you place in the State competition you can move on to the World competition, where, they really do have teams from all over the world!
^---- that is just my little summary of Odyssey of the Mind, but for the official site and information on the program you can go to... http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/
But anyway, my we just got back from my sister's competition and they placed 2nd in Regionals, so they will be moving on to State! ^^ Last year, i was on a team, and we placed 1st in Region, 2nd in State, and we got to move on to the World competition, where we had a BLAST! (however, we didn't place very well! ^^;; - 24th place- )
Well, i was just wondering if anyone else had any experiences with OM or if they had just heard of it! So, please do tell your stories!
(PS. This is just something interesting to me. I know some people can become a little bit obsessive, and focus their lives around OM, but i am not one of those people. I don't believe there is anything wrong with that, but it's just not me! lol) |
