Akira - film and mangas

im guessin mosto f you have seen the film, but how many of you have read the original mangas that the film was a translation of??

i bought the second one the other day and have just finished reading it, and they end on amazing cliff hangers, i need £92 to get the rest and im itching to buy them, but i know i wont have chance to spend that sorta money on something like that for a while seein as im tryin to get a flat (apartment) for me and my girlfriend

Usually the same thing happens when Mangas become Anime that happens in Hollywood when books become movies; a lot gets left out.

I was able to pick up the first 4 volumes of the manga before I came to Pittsburgh, and now I am scrambling to find the last two just so I know how it all ends! Good luck in your hunt Riv, and if I can find any sites that might help you I'll send them on to you!

I've only had the chance to glance at some of the manga, but what I saw was pretty amazing, and it did seem like they left a lot out in the movie. Not that the movie wasn't good, in a really creepy, skin-crawling kind of way. But is was very good. I liked it a lot. There were just a few parts that were a little... odd. But very good.

ive got 2 import shops near me (im in england remember, and aint got a credit card so cant buy online) and theyve got them all in (apart from the 2nd so was lucky to get that )

I've only read through 4 but I like 'em.

I've only seen the movie twice, first when it came out (long long ago, I was nothing but a child back then ... come to think about it it must have affected myself a lot) and the second time was not long ago, I was watching it at work ... in other words, I haven't understood that movie at all But it was a good one!

The scene that marked me and that helped me recall the fact that I saw it long ago was the scene where the old man tries to get away in the backstreet with his wallet full of money or contracts or whatever and that , as he is about to have an heart attack, he tries to take a shitload of piles to try to escape death ... but he fails, and stares at the horizon, as if he saw death coming, and falls to the ground, in the backstreet, left alone, while the rebelion cultist of Akira marches in the streets, and he dies there ... for some reason that's the only scene I could recall from the movie when I was young ... and some other flash of major violent explosions ... darn, I'm not too sure if it did good things to my psycological self to see that movie at such a young age.

before reading any of the manga's i didnt have a clue who the chanting woman is when the riots are going off (i now know, but dont wanna say anymore coz i dont know the full story, YET)

Single biggest difference for people to know about:

Timeline of movie- about a couple days at most to turn NeoTokyo into a warzone
Timeline of Manga series- Several months!

This alone should clue you into just how many plot twists, character developinc scenes, gratuitious violence, and whole characters were left out.

Yeah, the mangas are SO much more detailed, it's CRAZY. Like I said before, I haven't seen much of them cause I only saw them from over my friend's shoulder (my very TALL friend's shoulder) but from what I saw, and what he told me, there's a TON that happens in the manga that never makes it's way to the movie, like, the movie is only about half the whole story.
And, yes, BWS-1. I'd wonder what kind of effect that movie would have on young children. That and Dark Crystal. That movie would freak you OUT as a kid!

Oddly enough BWS-1, I think that was the first scene of Akira that I ever saw myself, and boy did I know I was hooked then! So began my continuous affair with the animation and comics of the far east Island known as Japan.
