Ok, so as you guys may or may not already know, I'm a waiter. I make pretty good money as a waiter, and it's because I do my job fairly well, and as a result, I make good tips from the tables I wait on. Now, onto my story...

So last night, one of my tables (my last table of the night) gets sat. I notice that it's three people "who fit a certain profile". (I won't get into that...) Not that I'm stereotyping, but everytime I get a table of people "who fit a certain profile", I end up getting a bad tip, and I don't know why. I treat them exactly as I treat other customers, and they obviously have the money to tip me better because they can obviously afford to spend so much on dinner. I have come to the conclusion that it's because people "who fit a certain profile" just don't know how to tip. But that's not the point I'm trying to make.

So I give them excellent service like I give every other customer. They run up an $80 bill. Now, if I gave them poor service, that warrants at least a 10% tip. That means $8. Ok service is worth 12%. Good service is lke 15%. I usually average somewhere between 18-20% in tips. Not that I'm being greedy though. I understand if you don't have enough money to tip, and I understand if really don't think I gave you good service at all (which I highly doubt based on my other tips). But whatever...again, it's not the point. I got $5. $5 for my hard service on a check of $80. To tell you the truth though, I pretty much expected it, because, as I said people "who fit a certain profile" have ALWAYS tipped me that way.

So after they pay me, I pick up the book and start going into the back to close out their check...grumbling as I go along, because while I did expect it, it still sucks. They get up and leave. So I start closing out the check when one of the waitresses comes in and says, "Andrew, what happened with your table?!"

I reply with, "What are you talking about?"

To which she replies, "They just walked outside, got jumped by the cops, and are being cuffed and arrested right now!"

So I run to the front, and sure as anything, there they were, being cuffed and placed into a squad car parked in front of the restaraunt. Apparently they were being staked out, and the cops caught them on their way out. I think it was a drug bust or something. All of a sudden, I didn't feel so bad about getting a crappy tip.

But, the moral of the story is: Karma is a bitch and WILL come back and bite you in the ass somehow...so please, remember to treat your waiters and waitresses well.

~Ming

Yes I too was a victim, uh I mean an employee of the service industry. We too had the aforementioned "people of a certain profile" problem. But we referred to them as (Sorry Shuri and BWS) Canadians because Canadians were an unlikely appearance in GA. I too recieved and expected bad tips from these profiled individuals but one time I did something about it.
So I'm bustin my ever-lovin @$$ for this table (a father and son) and the tab comes up to around $30. He leaves me $0.02. Yes, that's 2 pennies. Something snapped and I caught up to him, handed the two pennies back to him and said: "Sir you left these." to which he replied: "No, that's for you." I was hoping that he hadn't left a tip at all and had just 'overlooked' the change and the fact that he didn't made me SO angry. But, I kept my cool and said "Well sir, if this is all you can afford to tip you probably need it more than I do."
His face went blank and I walked off.

Bah da ba ba ba I'm loving it!

BWS is Canadian and he tips quite well.

HOORAY for generalizations there.

Anyhow, Ming, I know the feeling. I wrote a paper on it once. I'll have to scrounge it up. You'll appreciate it.

They got cuffed for being bad tippers! Wink

Ow. Always tip your waiters well - it's important. Although as a college student, my tips may be lacking because my money is not always free-flowing. Forgive me, ya?

I must admit, I suck at tipping. Sad

Usually, three things will happen when I attempt to tip:

A) I forget to tip completely. Happens most often when I pay cash, since I don't get the little paper with the word "tip" on it next to a line.
B) I miscalculate the tip.
C) I'm told tipping is different here than usual but later on said "man, I should've given more."

Nowadays, I just do 15% all over no matter what people say. Help

I'll say this here and now and get it out of the way.

Generalizations and stereotypes are based off of a majority of certain individuals fitting a certain pattern of behavior.

I'm a gun totin' red neck with a bad attitude. I'm egotistical, rude at times, and have no quarter for those I feel aren't putting out 100% of their effort 100% of the time, barring normal life changing accidents and occurances such as losing a loved one, or sickness of great pain.

And I'm okay with that.

Since from post Ming posts I've gathered the people were Canadian.

You haveta understand that the Canadian dollar is worth much less then the American and so $5 is like a weeks pay to them..They probably saved for 3 years to eat that $80 meal and in the process sold beaver furs to the Swedes to make ends meet.

More likely they probably just thought you were sponging welfare like they do up north and didn't need the extra cash...MWAHAHA!

Seriously though, I always tip at least 15%. I do get kinda pissed when people tip 25% because the waiter, "Brought us extra water." To Earn 25% there better have been some tap dancing involved on my behalf.

Man Gaaz, I have a sneaking suspicion that you're GOING TO HELL for jokes like that. This was probably a well off Canadian family that didn't have to work as long to come to America to eat. AND they also have Elk and elk pelts go for much more than beaver. You really need to take the whole scope of their ecosystem into consideration next time.

...may God forgive me.
