He steps out into the summer heat, closes the wooden door behind him, leans back against it. Blue eyes stare up at a matching sky and seem lost. Lost...but no longer searching. He pushes away from the door, up the steps to the dusty road, and begins the walk to the edge of town. A couple dozen steps feel like a solid mile of walking. He stops, under the crude wooden arch; "Oasis," it reads, "We hope you enjoyed your stay."
He turns back. One last time. And looks at the house, dug halfway into the ground like all the rest. Eyes like purest cherrywood. She leans against the open door, watches him, silent, unmoving. Nothing to say, really. Nothing to do. Nothing at all. One last time. He turns away, takes the first step of a journey to nowhere.
"Welcome, traveller," looks over his shoulder from the other side of the sign, in mocking, peeling black letters. A hand appears on her shoulder, and she clasps it absently, eyes still on the brown desert. He stops. He can't see the action...but it happens all the same, and by some cruel trick of fate, he knows anyway. The next step is more final. And the next more final still. Like crossing a burning bridge. On the fifth step, he leaves the last thing he will ever give to her.
A small puff in the dust, and a wet spot by his foot that evaporates quickly in the summer sun. Like it was never there at all. But she'll be out in a few days. Looking at something that no longer exists.
He hitches the rucksack higher on his shoulder, and strolls into the sunset.
Like he was never there at all. |

Hummm the potential actions that lead to this scene of leaving and desolation and abbandonment. With lots of dramatic feeling to it. Its like the end scene of a movie or the begining one. Who side would a reader want to see or even read. The one leaving the Oaisis or the one left behind?
Nice. |
