Hopefully the next best thing in MMORPG's, Guild Wars claims to be revolutionizing the genre. Along with such features as closed gaming zones, a great guild system (as the name implies), and a great deal of character customization, This game also boasts no subscription fees and dial up support.

This description of the game comes directly from the Guild Wars website FAQ:

Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences.
Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, kill stealing, and lines to complete a quest.

Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. But Guild Wars eliminates much of the tedium of traveling through the world. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they've previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map.

Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-on-guild warfare or the international tournament. But engaging in combat is always the player's choice; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.

Finally, unlike existing MMOs, all characters in Guild Wars inhabit the same virtual world -- they are not divided onto different servers or shards -- so players can always team up with or compete against any other player in the world.

For further information, check out the Guild Wars Site.

I've had my eye on it for a while. If you preorder it you gain access to the weekend beta program thing. One weekend a month you get to play beta. Plus reserve your name and such. Also you get an exclusive item depending on where you pre-order it. Reserving it at best buy nets you a nifty captain america-ish shield

You know what, I think I might go reserve it. I'm definately going to get it when it comes out. I just hope my PC is up to par. I can always transplant some parts if I want.

Anyways, I was wondering what classes you would think about playing? Since you can have two classes, I'd go makeshift paladin; ie, warrior/monk. But the ranger also catches my eye. I mean who doesn't want to have a pet?

I'm sure it'll be pretty cool. What I played of it didn't really hook me too well. The graphics were pretty, but it didn't really float my boat as far as how they're approaching the game. It seems like an odd mix between Lineage2 and PSO, honestly. The game IS MMO, but only for cities and socializing stuff. The instant-teleportation thing also takes away from the immersive feeling I enjoy in an MMORPG. The inconstant population from zone to zone is rather disorienting. if you're in a "solo" zone, and suddenly run into a city.. you wonder how exactly did everyone get here? You follow someone out the gates, and they're not there when you appear outside.

Now, for people who have limited playing time, want to enjoy a game in spurts of time, I'm sure this is absolutely perfect~ But I just set my standards and expectations differently.

Well, that lack off people in the world is part of the anti Kill Stealing, pking system. It makes alot more sense to me if you want to meet people or form a party you do it in the cities, where you can at least find someone trustworthy. Instant teleportation is a plus for me, because it's a pain in the ass to try and run back to a city when you have 4 hp and no potions left. Shadowbane and DAoC kinda killed that experience for me as I was always getting penalized exp because I couldn't run away fast enough and monsters would very darn well chase you to city gates where even the guards didn't help you all that much.

People got different tastes though. I just prefer more of a PSO environment to one where people are always looting my stuff...

Well once I worked out the mechanics of this game I actually found it to be pretty cool. So I went ahead and preordered it which means I will definetly be picking this up.
