Earlier tonight, I most probably quit my job as slave labor for Office Max. As it is still a bit fresh, and I have not talked to any manager that has the power to actually fire me, I am not sure if I have a job or not, and am not sure if it is a good thing or not. But as I was saying, I have been sick for nearly a week now, then, on the way home from the PO party, which was a lot of fun, and met some great people, I got a speeding ticket which is going to cost me around 300$. Party was worth it, but it still put me in a bad mood for today anyways.
I work all day without complaint, and do my job to my usual standard, which is higher than almost anyone else who works there. Now, manager Steve, not to be confused with King Steve although they are similar, was closing. That means, despite all the work we have to do for recovery to clean the store for tomorrow, he will wait all day, when we often have breaks when we aren't busy, to give us 4 or 5 projects to do at the very end. I'm used to that, its no big deal, but comes into play later on in the story.
Around 10:00, when we are supposed to close since we are staying open an extra hour for the holidays, I am cleaning the bathroom. This was not a fun task. The reason that the bathroom had to be cleaned was because the toilet was completely clogged and about as dirty as a toilet can get. So I got to clean it, someone has to we don't have janitors, since janitors get payed a good bit more than I do, but the entire time I am cleaning the bathroom, I hear Steve announcing over our radios for someone to help the last customer. Now, the entire time I spent cleaning the bathroom, and then cleaning myself, no one got around to this. So, when I got done, I went and tried to help them.
Steve is the Logistics Manager, not the Store Manager, he does not determine policy. The Store Manager's policy, as well as corporate policy, I think, is that we do not force any customer to leave. So I did not, despite that Steve was telling me to do so. Now, despite my best efforts, I did rush the customer a bit, but he finally says he has everything and is heading up front to check out. I think "Okay, now to finish the rest of the work I have to do so we can leave soon," this is already at around 10:20, 20 minutes after we should have closed and still have an hours worth of work to do thanks to Steve.
I am in a hurry. I want to leave, so I got to the front before the customer did, and Steve starts yelling at me saying "Where is the customer I told you to tell him we are closed and he needs to leave." I can't remember if he started cussing at me during this, or a bit after but somewhere in here just start adding the cuss words. I reply with the fact that David, the Store Manager, says we are not supposed to be rude and hurry customers out. He yells at me saying that telling them they have to leave isn't rude, and that he told me to do so. He then goes off to do something or other. I go and clock out to leave. As I am walking to the breakroom to get my stuff, I walk by him and he asks me what I am doing, so I tell him I clocked out and I am leaving.
During this part, I know for a fact he was cussing at me, and it isn't the first time he has either. I have even confronted him about it before, where he cussed at me more, but at the time I needed money more than I do at the moment. Anyways, he yells and cusses at me saying "[You're not leaving] [We still have to put out some of the furniture and sweep and [. . .] did I say you could leave." I reply quite calmly and coldly, "No, sir." To which he replies, "[[. . .]Then you aren't leaving until I say you can[. . .]" He then shoves a cart full of stuff at me and tells me to put it away.
Now, I may not care about my job much, and I don't fear any sort of retribution, but I do care about my co-workers who are stuck in the same sort of situations as me daily. And I still feel a bit bad about leaving them to finish closing alone. But I put away what of the cart I could in under 30 seconds, which was a lot of it, brought it up to the front where everyone else was, but I didn't see the manager about sadly, and told them to tell the manager he could put the rest of it away himself, and if he said anything to tell him it was my two weeks notice. Then I walked out the doors.

Way to go Godwyn! I give you mad props for sticking it to the man. Also, congratulations on handling just about the entire situation quite calmly. Most people would have lost it by then. Anyhoo, if things went exactly as you say they did, you were right entirely. On a sidenote, the whole ticket thing happened to my cousin (Simply Jose) when we were coming back from Atlanta. Just bear with whatever crap you have to deal with when you get back. Eventually, Steve's crap will catch up to him and he'll be stuck in a big steaming pile of it.

...Wow, dude. I probably would have stabbed him with the nearest handy object(sharp or not) and left XD

That's a tough call, though. If I was in the position of whoever has to make these decisions, I would be hesitant to fire you, because of how much of an asset I gather you are to the store, not to mention how the acting manager seemed to be going against company policy. Granted, I wasn't there, so I can't give an accuate opinion, but going on what you've said, I wouldn't fire you, but probably would do something disciplinary. But again, I wasn't there.

Be optimistic, though ^_^

Heh, I'm not so much an invaluable asset as I am slave labor. The store will be just fine without me, but they will have to find someone else who will do just about anything without complaint while being the lowest paid person in the entire store. Also, its not so much getting fired as saying its my two weeks notice, which I am serious about, I am done with the job. I have had enough of it.

dude, you stuck it too him vey well. I just dont get why most people and managers in retail arent as level headed as the people i work with. Not only my managers, but the leads and other workers in B+N are all great people. Dude, you shoudl try getting a job there.

Me being much like you, im a very hard worker, and because of my hard work, i not only get respect and praise for the hard work, but i also get payraises Very Happy

Dude, consider B+N. You dont have to be a big book reader. If anything, you could be like me and work in the cafe as a Barista, and tell people that you arent a starbucks Very Happy

But as far as that, i hope your future careers dont turn out as fishy as the other.

Now...speaking of work...im off to it! *gets ready and goes*

It's the simple fact that power corrupts. Even the slightest power like a management position will corrupt a weak willed person and they will become a total jerk. My friend's boss at bestbuy was a total asshole. He needed to take a day off so he could move and he let his specific department boss know well in advance but the crazy random other boss got pissed off and told him he had to be there and he didn't care if he had to move. The owner didn't care however which is just plain retarded how jerkish people can be.

On another note. Logistics=Joke Job lmao. I worked logistics at Ani-Magic this year and it really was the lamest job ever. Basically a Master Chair Setter-Upper. Logistics people just make sure everything runs smoothly and go and help the other departments if they need help. lol. It's not our job to be jerks so whoever that guy was is a moron.

*pats* But don't worry, you were miserable there anyway. Now your free to go find a job that you might actually enjoy. I never say you as the Office Depot kind of guy anyway. Good job standing up for yourself. That manager sounds like a real moron. He really sounds like he has no concept of how to manage a store at all.

As for the speeding ticket.... Shocked . I must confess I am shocked mainly because I know how you drive. ^_^ But hey it couldn't be that bad. If you feel bummed about it IM and I'll tell you about my cousin Alex's recent traffic violation. That will cheer you up.

Tobi-- believe me, if the Barnes and Nobles near us were less than half an hour away and hiring, I'm sure Godwyn would be working there. He's a -big- book reader and discounts are always good...but the closest ones are at Northpoint and Mall of Georgia, both of which are half an hour away when there -isn't- any traffic. And neither are hiring as far as any of us know.

Anyhow, I'm glad you've finally quit that damn job, boy. I've been telling you you ought to for a while yet, since they treat you so badly.

I'm sure you can find a much -better- job that doesn't take advantage of you, without too much trouble...though you'll have to wait a while since everywhere's gonna have an excess from the holidays soon.
