my Ethical Theory teacher has asked quite an interesting question as a final question, and i figured id share it with you guys, to see what your views on this is. Also, i'll post my answer after the question.
The devil shows up at your door one day and offers you $10,000 for your soul. You can live out your life in luxury, health and comfort to a ripe old age, but on the day of your death, the devil gets to take your soul. What would Kant advise and why?
Kant would first say that according to the categorical imperative. The first and second formulae would be violated becuase we cannot conceive of everyone doing this (namely, priests or the faithful would not abide by this conjecture), nor would we want to will this, or else heaven would be overrun by the demonic forces of hell.
By the third formula, we can see that while it can be seen as respecting a person's choice to do this for the benefit of their own life as an end in itself, it cannot be willed, due to the knowledge of what happens after death.
And besides...$10,000? I couldn't pay for half of my tuition with that money!
Ok...so i got a little sarcastic at the ned, but id figure that it would be cool for anyone who had an understanding of The Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals to give their two cents on the question at hand.
Adios!
That is all |

Without even getting into Kant, I can advise that this is a complete no-no. Tods, you're absolutely correct, if anything, because in today's day and age, $10,000 is nothing. The devil's gonna have to do A LOT better than that to get my soul. |

Uhhhhh....If I've learned one thing it's that between the two of us, you're the hardcore one. Therefore, I'll just go put on the apron, take off the shoes, and can be found in the kitchen |
