So some of you know this already, but back in March, I used my tax return to pay off my car.
I paid it off a year early.  It's always nice to be able to do something like that. So now I get to save $323/month b/c I don't have a CAR PAYMENT. Yay!!!
So some of you might ask... Shino... what are you going to do with that extra money.
Well... as a few of you know... part of that money each month will go to Mom's Birthday Gift.
Currently my mother is driving around a '94 Toyota Corolla with NOTHING in it. Literally. We are talking 5-speed with Crank windows! Currently she is unable to afford a new car for herself. And hers is pretty old and is starting to scare her a little. So this is something I have been thinking about for about 6 months and I have decided to do it. Since I just paid off a Mitsubishi, I'm in good standing with Mitsu Motor Credit. It also gives me another car to build a relationship on with my Mitsu dealer as I hope to one day get my Evo.
Not only that, but the Warrenty on Mitsu's right now (even though they got rid of the 45K scheduled free maint) is still the best around.
I'm planning on getting her the Lancer ES with the Convenience Package.
I'm going to get a 2005 since the 2006s will be coming in on the lot and I can probably get one for around $12.5K. I've been saving up so I have a pretty chunky down payment, and some of my family has also agreed to help out with the down payment. My goal was to get the payments under $150/month and I think that is going to work out.
Why am I doing this? Well, I had a very tough time growing up. It was just my mother and I. Been working since I was 13. Worked through college. At one point I was going full time to school and working 3 jobs. And all that time I lived at home, and my mom did everything she could to make sure that I finished school and made the best possible life for myself. I think I have done that now. And as much as I know she would say that I don't need to do it, it's time I give her something back.
Her birthday is on July 5th. I'm throwing her a big party on the 3rd, where I will give her the last gift. A jewlery box. And when she opens it, she will find a key. Then I will lead her outside where the car will be sitting with a big red bow on it. Yes I have talked with Mitsubishi and they are going to get me a big bow. 
This is going to be the biggest surprise of her life! ... so yeah if you happen to see "Shino's mom"... DON'T SAY ANYTHING.

WOW. My parents would die. Well, at least my step dad. He has some heart problems. I hope to be able to do something like that for my parents some day.
One question. Where do you find those big bows? |

Dude, that's one of the nicest things that I've ever heard. Your mom is very lucky to have a son like you, and from what it sounds like, you're lucky to have a mom like her. So in retrospect, I think everything works out.
I just find it funny that you got rid of car payments so you can make more car payments. Although, it would be REALLY nice to get it under $150/month. |

Well, I have been planning on paying off my car for some time now. Close to a year ago I decided that's what I was going to use my tax return for. But in that time, I also saw my mother grow very weary and unhappy with her vehicle. She wants a new car so bad, but she can't afford it.
It is true that I got rid of one car payment to pick up another, but we are comparing $323/month to < $150/month.
Less than half. I will still be saving up my money. This is just something I want to do, and have always wanted to do. |

thats agreat thing for you to do for your mum, especially if she feels unsafe in her current car, the Mystic Blue Pearl looks nice on that too
and wow $14k for the basic package??? would be cheaper to go to america buy the car AND ship it back to the UK than buy a car here (your looking at a 14k-14k conversion rather than the £1=$2 conversion) |

Really though thats a cool thing to do for your mom, hopefully one day I will be in the finacial situation to show my apreciation to my parents in a way like that. . .but thats a looong way away lol |
