Okay, I hear what you're saying Ted, and I agree with you. To an extent. There is one thing that I think is missing in your ideas here: How an effective marketing team can change the essence of the thing that you think is cool.
Ex: Thing A is an on going TV series that a few loyal fans watch and keep it afloat by doing so. The TV station doesn't like this situation. They want a really popular TV show. So they bring in a new marketing manager to bring it around. The new marketing manager says: "You must do actions 1,2,3 and 4 for the show to be popular." They show's director is being pressured. He agrees to do these things. Now, the show is popular, but is it really the same show?
Again, we can change the situation slightly for another idea.
Say Thing A becomes popular all by itself. The masses love it! It's a hit! But soon the TV execs start to say to themselves: "We've got this popular show, let's milk it!" So, they bring in Marketing and start to put out merchandize. But that's not enough. They want a money maker. So Marketing says: "You need to impliment changes 1,2 and 3 and that will bring in more viewers." So they do. And it DOES become more popular. But is it the same show?
The point is not in whether or not you like whatever thing is popular. You must, otherwise you wouldn't be interested. It has to do with how it changes in order to BE popular or STAY popular that really effects it.
