Capcom goes Old School with Beatdown

Beatdown looks and plays well for what it is. The demo is out and it looks like the bastard child of Last Bronx and Tekken (when Tekken was good). The exploration mode is similar to Ghost in the Shell and Psi Ops but it's so "pick up and play" friendly. Keep in mind this is not much more than a grown up button masher but it does have more legit combos than many fighting games. The fighting variances (high punch to low kick to punch to punch to..." remind of Def Jam and VF. It has a very 2D feel as well. And the best? They pay homage to all the Sega fighters (Streets of Rage, mostly) with the names. The guys' names are Falcon, Hawk, Eagle, Condor, etc. just like all the old villians in the side to side beat'em ups. If they release it at $30 it's a seller as it still won't appeal to everyone. There's no car jacking, shooting, or Hot Coffee, after all.

Oh, I dunno. I've been wanting to see a Streets-style game for a while - Tekken Force mode was nice, but it seemed like an add-on to the other game. Having a game like that by itself that looks and plays good would be very nice.

(Are there any like that now?)

This game is actually one of the first of some new gen Beat 'em Ups. I look forward to playing it. It seems like it'd be fairly decent. Plus there's going to be customization, so you can change the characters to look the way you want 'em to. Hopefully this is only the beginning of this trend. I know there's a new Final Fight in the works, but Capcom may wait to see what the results are with this one.

Well, with the way I buy games, I'll get it about three years after it's released, but maybe I'll get it as a gift from someone and get it earlier. I hope it's good.
