So, for those of you that don't know, I managed to land a seat in one of the coolest classes on the face of the earth: The History of Rock and Roll.
So, my assignment is to make a CD sampler consisting of 3-4 songs from each decade of rock, starting in the 50s going to the present day (late 90s to now). I figured I'd share the playlist with ya guys
50s
1. Jerry Lee Lewis Great Balls of Fire
2. Buddy Holly Thatll be the Day
3. Elvis Presley A Little Less Conversation
60s
4. The Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
5. The Rolling Stones Paint It Black
6. Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze
70s
7. The Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop
8. The Clash Rudie Cant Fail
9. Aerosmith Walk This Way
80s
10. Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood
11. Billy Idol Rebel Yell
12. Guns n Roses Paradise City
90s
13. Nirvana Come As You Are
14. Tool Sober
15. Foo Fighters Everlong
Present
16. Marilyn Manson Rock Is Dead
17. Godsmack Spiral
18. The White Stripes Seven Nation Army
Anyone got any opinions on my list? Anything they would possibly change, or feels reflects the era better? Or anyone just wanna say how great some of these songs are?
~That is all |

I agree with Therin. Besides, Manson isn't a good representation of the "popular" rock scene. You need something like Linkin Park or Evanescence, or Seether. Maybe Nickelback. Any kind of "radio rock" that you can think of.
I really like the rest of your list, although (personally) I would switch out Sgt. Pepper for another Beatles song, like Get Back, or Day Tripper.
I also think you should include Steppenwolf in your 60's or 70's list. They were a definite influence on rock. Come on, how many movies have "Born to be Wild" on their frikkin' soundtracks?
EDIT
I think Incubus would be a perfect replacement for Manson. There have been countless "Incubus wanna-bes" come out since Incubus appeared on the scene, I would say they're very influencial and important to the rock scene. |

I see...While i do agree, that Linkin park is a very big part of the current music of the present, I chose manson for three reasons:
a) I'm looking for music that isn't super popular forms of rock, due to a new way of understanding rock from the class. Rock has been a very expressive genre of music, and has been derived off of "Disrupting the Order." I find Manson disrupts that Order very well.
b) I'm trying to find music that I know other people will not have on their samplers. I know at least half of my class will probably put Linkin Park on there at some point or another. I figure i put different stuff for the latter of everything, I can open some eyes and ears to a different sound for a short period
c) I'm actually a Manson fan
to add to my first part, primary aimed at Therin: the class is a lot about controversy surrounding rock, since that is what it tends to do. A lot of the early and current day rock springs up problems with everyone, since it gets the youth (the target audience) to really think about current-day situations.
I think if i considered Steppenwolf, it would be in replacement for Aerosmith. I wouldn't wanna get rid of the Ramones or The Clash, since Punk Rock is one of the better things (Completely in my Opinion) to happen to rock. It is the embodiment of the "rebel without a cause."
I am curious about Incubus, though. I never considered them, mainly because i find their rock, while good, not what I'm looking for. But hey, they are good, nonetheless. Maybe on a future assignement, i'll have to throw "Pardon Me" or something else thats fun into the mix. Good stuff! |

But that's the point.

What scene are you looking at? Manson is HUGE. If he wasn't as big as popular as he is, his ass would be in the unemployment office.

The problem with "radio rock" is that it usually = "overplayed rock" which is what I know he was trying to avoid with this. The only exception is Seether (which happens to be one of my favorite bands) who does not see NEARLY enough air time as they should.
Not that I'm trying to put down anyone else's opinions. It's just that because I was basically Tobs' advisor through this project, I see where he's coming from with a lot of his choices. He tried to avoid the conventional, which is why you see songs such as "A Little Less Conversation" and "Sgt. Pepper" when he could have easily gone with something much more popular.
I also though it was deliciously ironic that the Manson song he chose was "Rock is Dead". My only thought is that this should have been the last song. |

I misunderstood what the assignment was. I know, Manson is popular, but he's not "popular."
The reason why I suggested radio rock was because it was "popular." I didn't understand what he was trying to do with his assignment x_x
Personally, I like all kinds of music, although my favorite genre is indie pop/rock. Most of the bands I like, you probably haven't heard of
***EDIT***
Oh yeah! Forgot ^^;

Okay, I like the reasons why you chose Manson =D continue on.
As for the punk, I completey agree with you, although it would be more balanced to have pop rock, hippie rock, and punk than to have pop rock and two punk rocks. But I do like your reasoning behind choosing two punk rock songs.
I think the best Incubus songs are their political ones, being as the band is very politally drived. But thank you for considering them =) |

Incubus is political? I'm not the biggest fan, but I do know they're stuff some, and I never thought they were political. Although, I'm not usually good at picking up the underlying meaning of things. So to me, political is blatant like Rage Against the Machine and System of a Down. Just curious, which Incubus songs are more political, because I'd love to check them out again. |

Well, they're political not just in that they have songs that are political, but also in their songs that are a social commentary.
Ruling out everything except their songs which are strictly political, I came up with this list =)
take me to your leader
medium
speak free
the answer
version
a certain shade of green
privilege
consequence
when it comes
out from under
just a phase
mexico
under my umbrella
megalomaniac
a crow left of the muder
agoraphobia
pistola
made for tv movie
follow
damnation?
miss bliss
pillow your eyes
And songs that are commenting on society...
you will be a hot dancer
sink beneath the line
vitamin
idiot box
favorite things
nebula
deep inside
the warmth
make yourself
pardon me
warning
are you in
talk shows on mute
priceless
zee deveel
leech
bathe in my snot
I like my Incubus. o.o |
