Just got finished spending the last 3 days playing this game for about 5 hours apiece. Lets get underway.
Story:
I don't know the whole back story on the Hulk aside from what the craptastic movie gave me. Basically in this games' story, the government agent who is hunting you is exposed himself and become a monster alot larger than you. In addition there's a secret task force known as Division who hunt you, as well as gov funded robots called "Hulkbusters". The story is kinda corny I guess, but if you're playing The Hulk for the storyline, I think you should probably go give yourself a swirly. don't forget the pre-flush.
Story: 3/10
Gameplay:
THIS is what it's all about! The biggest factor in the game (and what makes it so damn fun) is jumping. Remember how in the movie he was jumping over canyons and stuff? YOu can do that here too. and not some crappy timed jump from a certain spot on the ground that cuts to a scene of him jumping (IE Blood Omen) We're talking you charge a jump and clear 5 skyscrapers! As the story progresses you learn sweet new moves that take advantage of your gamma radiation combined with the Hulks raw power. So far my favorite has to be grabbing a chopper and hauling it to the ground.
Gameplay: 10/10
Things of note:
So far the toughest area for me has been like the 3rd or 4th mission in where you have to protect a building from an onslaught of tanks. I think I redid the mission about 25 times before I outlasted the timer. These aren't usually in a review, but I thought it merited a mention, as I was about 5 tries from giving up, lol. The Key to winning is finding out what damages the tanks the most without having to charge and waste time. I found that picking up a tank after you destroy it and using it to smash in the other tanks is the most effective.
Another tip - You'll notice in the city there's a lighthouse that you can't get to. At first I figured that later I would get a more powerful jump. Well, that didn't happen. What I did find was that in town there's a big inflatable balloon man that you can grab and take to the tallest building near the lighthouse and glide there.
Music:
Nothing too fancy that stuck in my head. The music isn't really memorable, you're having too much fun destroying things and jumping all over completing objectives. I cannot recall so I guess it was average.
Music: 5/10
Graphics:
This game doesn't really take the PS2 to the extreme with graphics, but they aren't bad. If you've played any other marvel game for the PS2, then you know what to expect.
Graphics: 7/10
Controls:
I picked up the controls in a snap. They give you a HUGE area in the beggining to just play around in and smash stuff up before you go out to do missions, and it was a great place to practice. Also, when learning new moves that might be more complex, they give you a tutorial option that takes you back there to practice your new moves. I usually stay there until I destroy everything. Normally, I would only give the controls an 8, but I'm definitely willing to add two more points since they really let you get settled in to them before they throw anything serious at you.
Controls: 10/10
Difficulty:
I was on easy mode (me and a friend were switching off missions and he wanted it on easy) and I must say, the difficulty does take steep cliffs if you don't know what to do. The game was amazingly easy until the aformentioned tank mission, and the first "boss" was pretty difficult since I didn't know what to do. However, after those it kind of evened out.
Difficulty: 7/10
Fun Factor:
As much as I have said "eh" to various aspects of the game, I can't get around the fact that it's just plain FUN. I laughed so hard I almost cried the first time I took a stop light post and used a civilian as a golfball. My favorite thing to do in the city would be to nap a civi, go to a tall skyscraper near the water with an antennae, and tee off, lol. This game is the GTA3 of superhero games.
10/10
Overall, this game was a blast to play, and I'm probably going to buy it. If the new spiderman game is anything like this one, then Marvel has gotten down the pattern of making really fun games. Worth a buy, DEFINITELY worth a rent.
Overall: 9/10

I played a demo of it at Gamestop.
And I definitly agreed with what you said about the game being just plain -Fun-. It literally is GTA: Hulk. Running around smashing cars and causing massive damage. The game is appropriately named, Ultimate Destruction. I don't see myself -buying- it but I do forsee a rental in my future. |
