Okie dokie. I'm not in science, like I'm supposed to be, because, quite frankly, I can't take Ms. Pirkle. Mr. Rogers is bad enough.

As soon as I walked in the room, he was yelling. So, I gave him my pass (I was in testing) and sat down. We had a tornado drill, then he told us to complete the assignment we started yesterday. (I did it for homework, because I didn't know we'd have time today.) So, of course, I turned it in, and pulled out my sketch pad. Chris apparently turned around to get some of his stuff from his bag and Mr. Rogers exploded. He told him to sit down, turn around, and not talk. Chris was a. Not standing up B. Not talking. Yeah, he was turned around--digging in his bookbag. I got miffed, but bit my tounge. A few minutes later, Jessica asked me for a sheet of paper, so I handed one over, and he exploded on her. She tried to explain that she was only asking for a sheet of paper, but he kept yelling. So I started to fuss. And when I fuss...I FUSS. Either way, He kept telling me to be quiet, I kept going, eventually I was crying...He softened up then, but I only grew more resiliant. He asked me if I wanted to go to the bathroom, I stated matter-of-factly that I only wanted to sit where I was. He tried to bring me a kleenex, I pushed them away. He left the room, I began to rant on how I offer decency, I offer respect, and how I only ask for the same in return. I only ask to be treated like a human, not a toy, not a paycheck. Everyone just agreed. Sidrah brought me a kleenex, and I accepted *that* kleenex, because Mr. Rogers hadn't touched it. So Ms. Stinchcomb came and got me, took me out into the hall, and asked me what was wrong. I told her how I was tired of Mr. Horton, and tired of Ms. Pirkle, and tired of Mr. Rogers and tired of how they constantly yelled and screamed at us. I was crying and I was shaking and I was dizzy. I'm still doing everything but crying. Anyway...She told me to write a statement, and hugged me, and consoled me by reminding me of the 96 I had gotten on my report earlier that day. At the end of the period, I told her that I just couldn't take a period with Ms. Pirkle, so she said to say I was sick and come in her room. Ms. Pirkle was at least a little nice. I told her I was sick, and she said "Physically or Mentally?" I half-laughed and said "Well, both." and she said I could go in Ms. Stinchcomb's class after I finished my test. ...I told that to Ms. Stinchcomb, and she gave me a drawing I asked her to laminate FOREVER ago (the laminator had been broke) and I went off to do my test. I finished it, and now I'm here. Ready for the ranty part?

Why do teachers have to act like they're constantly on egotistic power trips? I mean, they act as though I'm just a paycheck, not human. Mrs. Blackmon and Ms. Stinchcoms, they're the only good teacher's I've had at this school. It's all so strange...but...The teacher punish harshly and unfairly. We're always the enemy. They never do any wrong. I don't quite get it. Maybe I just have a "disrespect for authority" or somthing. I don't really have a disrespect for authority, just a disrepect for unfair opression. Now how in the world can anyone sit through this? How in the world? I'm getting everyone to write statements if they feel like they've experienced a bit of this too, and I'm turning it in to the counselor. Sound like a plan? I need your advice/sympathy/experiences

I got detention once because of a teacher like this.

My French teacher(Who doesn't speak French very well) gave it to me because I was sitting sideways in my seat, and she automatically assumed I was talking. I shall replay the scenario for you.

I'm sitting there, looking at my shoes. The teacher walks daintily up to her podium. Now, when I say 'dainty' I mean what can be considered for her to be dainty. She kind of tromps about to get where she needs to go. Daintily walking is stomping up to the podium. She is under the impression that I talk too much in her class. Talking to her must be staring at the ceiling. Whatever, maybe she entertains herself that way at home. Anywho. I was looking at my big ol' boots that I wear, when suddenly she starts screaming. "STOP TALKING!" I didn't look up, because I thought she was yelling at one of the twenty-five other people who actually WERE talking. So then she yells my name, and I looked up, and she screams again, "STOP TALKING!" I tried to protest, which spawned a response of "THAT'S IT! YOU'RE GOING TO DETENTION!"

Luckily, I didn't have to go to detention. The administrative assistant to whom I reported this gave the cow of a teacher a demerit, and instead of making me serve ISS let me off free.

And they all lived happily ever after, except for Mrs. Cow Teacher.

Coming from someone who entertained the thought of becoming a teacher - fairly recently too I might add...

This is in no way an excuse, but I tell you, teachers get such the short end of the stick.

Not only are they in a position where you have the ultimate responsibility of shaping the futures of America, quite underpaid I might add, they are also, in a large way, expected to raise a large group of someone else's children.

Children, yes, who on the majority have not one shred of an idea of what the word RESPECT means or stands for. Not one CLUE of what a person in their position must face on a daily basis.

My older sister is in interpreter at a school. So she is in a way a teacher. She's had to deal with out and out rude bastards, punching, clawing, biting, back talking. My brother-in-law teaches as well, again receiving severe disrespect. And I don't think you would ever meet two more laid back people. Yes I know it's a little strong to call them that but I swear, parents don't do NEARLY enough to educate their own offspring on values and respect. Teachers are one of the human beings out there that deserve automatic respect. Their jobs in lots of cases are thankless and the only one true reward is seeing their students succeed because I'll tell ya, the pay ain't crap! So the paycheck excuse doesn't fly.

When a child does something wrong, parents tend to blame the schools, the media and various other nameless "offenders." Parents wondering "what are they teaching you in school to make you act so violent and hateful?"

Everyday, a teacher has to get up in front of a group of young people and try to educate children who don't want to to learn, try to deprogram all disrespectful behavior... EVERYDAY!

I mean, it's like taking a puppy, potty training it EVERYDAY, and then have someone else outside of your jurisdiction brainwash him to crap everywhere in the house then going through the potty training the next day, etc.

Monotonous? Yes. For the impatient? Not neccessarily. For every student that acts up in one class you can rest assured that they are neither the first nor the last.

Doesn't excuse the teacher from blowing up, but just gives ya a bit of a nugget to chew on when complaining about a teacher.

Some people may indeed not need to be in that profession.

(next day after my first hockey practice) yep, i got suspended, he got fired, and the principal never looked at me the same again.

my dad said he was proud of me. he said im glad you stood up for yourself against a teacher especially. well anyways i hope your teachers tires fall off...i mean, i hope they straighten themselves up. -hides lug nuts and wrench- >Very Happy

Well, since this is to be my 100th post, I might as well make it good and respond to this, which is a topic that I have wrestled with in the past. Let me warn you, this post may be long, and some of it is from a collection of rants I wrote from Rev, Takao, and my webcomic, FlopJocks.

Quote:
Why do teachers have to act like they're constantly on egotistic power trips?

It is true, a lot of teachers act this way. I've noticed that this attitude can manifest itself in two ways, or at least two ways that I have experienced.

It has occurred to me that many teachers are just jerks, for lack of a better word. I will admit that teachers are smart, but in all honesty, some of them let their intelligence go to their heads. What I mean is that they feel some incessant need to prove to the entire world how smart they are, most likely by teaching the class in a way that confuses the hell out of the students. Unfortunately because of these teachers' superiority complexes, too many students are turned off from subjects which can be very interesting and fulfilling. Honestly, who made the rule that leaning had to be hard? Just because a class is hard doesn't mean that you learned any more than a class that's easy. Why be proud of how difficult your class is? Why not be proud of how many students have gained a vast wealth of knowledge from you, and how many students' lives you've touched by sharing said knowledge. I have the utmost respect for teachers; especially the ones that are concise, to the point, and that make learning fun. I loathe, however, the ones who have some strange holier-than-thou attitude that makes them think that they're a better teacher for failing more people.

The other way I have to describe from experience. Last semester, I took a poetry class with what was possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. I mean, he knew his stuff, and he was actually good at conveying lessons, he was just a completely arrogant bastard who thought that the world revolved around him. One day, we had a snow day at school. Actually, we had morning classes, but the snow wasn't letting up, and they cancelled classes after 12:30, which meant I missed my poetry class. This was on Thursday, and the next poetry class was Monday. I get to class Monday, and he starts telling us how the University is a bunch of idiots for cancelling classes when the snow was "clearly" not a problem. Then he starts bitching about how it took him 2 hours to get home, etc, etc. Finally, he tells us that the missed class will be made up, on Tuesday of that week, and that the class was not optional. At the end of class I went up to him and told him that I couldn't make the make-up class because I had a prior committment (which I did have...I mentor Tuesday afternoons...). He got all nasty with me telling me that it was then my responsiblity to get the notes, etc, etc. He did this to another student as well.

This royally pissed me off because we didn't miss class because of anything wrong that we did, and I don't think he has a right to reschedule a class (for the next day) and bitch when people can't drop everything they're doing for you. At least ask when its convenient for everyone to reschedule. In my opinion, if you're a college professor, you should be responsible enough to plan at least one missed day into your syllabus per semester. Who know, maybe YOU get sick one day. Its not the students fault that you didn't show, so why should we have to make a class up?

Now, these are experiences from college, which is somewhat different from grade school, high school, etc. Very rarely do teachers yell at the students, or the students (openly) show disrespect. But in reality, these situations ARE similar. Teachers act in unfair manners all the time, whether its unjustly yelling at students or expecting everyone to drop everything for you. Unfortunately, its the students who end up being hurt as a result.

Before I close this novel-length post, let me say that I also agree somewhat with Doot as well. A lot of the youth today have no regard for authority, and have no clue what respect it. If you try to discipline them, then automatically you're persecuting them because they're younger. I really feel bad for a lot of these teachers today who have to put up with bratty kids. If they're short and frustrated all the time, its because they really get the bad end of the stick, and have to put up with a lot of crap coming from a lot of places. This all boils down to the fact that no one seems to want to accept, and that is that most parents today just don't know how to raise their kids. Instead of nurturing them, they sit them in front of the TV because it shuts them up. One more story and I promise I'll stop...

In high school, we had health class. One day we had a panel of parents come and talk to us about how their kids had problems with drinking, drugs, etc. But then they were telling us how they handled these situations, and how they acted when they were kids. They basically did nothing to discipline these kids, and they told us stories about how they use to experiment with drugs when they were kids. And you wonder why your kids have problems!

Not saying that Katana or any of her friends are disrespectful like this, or that they're parents are doing anything wrong, but seriously, all we need to solve a great deal of today's problems is to have parents wake up and realize that they're kids are walking all over them, and everyone else.

I hope some of that made sense....

~Ming

i kind of have to agree with doot, but i feel your problems katana. I have seen teachers that have lived to make lives miserable, but there arent that many. Its really the kids that cause the problems. If every kid adered to the rules of the class, then the teacher would most likely keep her cool. when in middle school, i actually saw someone get sent to detention, because he was being insubordinate. While he was walking out, he picked up a text book and threw it at the teacher. Now i have to say, that was outright wrong. Its becasue of people like him that the teacher will now be extra strict and a further pain in the arse.

So what doot said is correct, but then there are teachers who are just pieces of S**t. One teacher was my 2nd grade teacher, back in my days of Catholic school. She would send people to the "library" (aka: detention area) for doing the most menial things, including not bringing in homework. Now that was just wrong.

I have to say though, katana, that you have much more guts then i do. U should meet my cousin one day, he has no guts as well Very Happy

See this whole thing is unfortunate for me because I was BEGGING for a teacher to throw down and beat the Shiznit out of my classes.

While picking on someone who isn't doing anything is bad it's WORSE when a teacher lets their students walk all over them. ESPECIALLY during a cool EASY ass class like Chemistry. My teaacher let EVERYONE walk all over her and took it in stride meanwhile she tride to teach us some kick-ass experiments you can do at home involving fire and thingies like that. But no one ever listened to her because they knew they didn't have to.

I can honestly say I've never had a teacher that was STRICT I've had ones that were fair and oneor two that basically would take *Troubled* children into the hall and yell at them and ask them if they had a problem with them then the student (Being NOT surrounded by HIS friends) would start to weep or something. So I'd laugh at them and one time the same teacher tried the same thing and the student didn't budge so he said, "If you don't like the way I teach then feel free to hit me. But I hope you know AZ just passed a law that says I can fight back." Then he flexed his about 24 inch biceps while putting his arms in a cross the chest thing...Needless to say the student DID NOT hit him and surprisingly shut the hell up.

So yeah, ALL my teachers were WAY under-paid for what they hadta put up with but most made the best of it. But I never had a teacher make ME feel like I was just another number on the attendance sheet. But then again, I didn't goof around in class. After class however.....hehehe

My spanish teacher lets people walk all over her. They keep talking, and she just laughs...its rediculous. I was like "Ms Resto, u need to start kicken some butt!" but all she does now is give an occasional pop quiz if we talk too much.

that is all Hmmm

Now that I am in college I think that the teachers give you more respect in college and you will realize that when you get into college.
