It is common place that members of the Yakuza will cut off fingers as an apology or penance (this tradition is referred to as "yubitsume"), so in Japan, if someone is missing one of their fingers, it is a sign that they are Yakuza (although recently, Yakuza have been using prosthetic fingers to hide the fact that they are Yakuza from the general public).
When Bob the Builder and Postman Pat, both cartoons that feature characters with less than four fingers on each hand, were being brought over to Japan, there were plans in place to add extra digits to their hands in order to avoid scaring Japanese children.
I find this really interesting and thought I would share, being that Pocket Otaku are designed with three fingers on each hand 
So, in conclusion....we're all Yakuza!! WWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
