They pulled the media remote out of the premium package.
This means that the people who still remain on waiting lists that preordered months ago get screwed out of part of their package.
Not a very cool thing to do considering they haven't filled all the preorders. I can understand if they did that after the preorders were filled, then they could say ... well you should have preordered.
Goooooooooooooooooooo Microsoft!
Some of the things they are doing, I think they believe they have already won the next generation console war.

Limited edition mini Media Remote Control with premium pack runs out; preorders being filled now out of luck.
When the Xbox 360 made its grand launch in North America last November, gamers who got a hold of the hard-to-find premium pack were treated to a few extras. In addition to a 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, and HD AV cables, early adopters also got a limited edition Xbox 360 Media Remote Control. Though chances of finding an Xbox 360 are remote, the chances of finding one with the bonus remote are even more...remote.
The limited run of bonus Media Remote Controls is apparently over. A GameStop employee has confirmed to GameSpot that the bonus remotes have not been shipping with the Xbox 360 Premium Packs that have been trickling into their store. This means that Xbox 360 preorders that still remain unfulfilled--and may very well have been placed months ago--won't be getting the controller. GameSpot has received unconfirmed reports that the discontinuation has infuriated gamers who preordered the console long ago expecting the remote to be included.
All is not lost though. Gamers looking to get a TV-style remote control to play DVDs and whatnot can still pony up for Microsoft's Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote ($29.99) or Logitech's Harmony Advanced Universal Remote for Xbox 360 ($129.99).

You know what. Let them think that all they want. When PS3 comes down and the Xbox side of Microsoft goes bankrupt, I'll be happy to let out the big "I told you so" to all the poor pathetic Xbox fans out there. |

Not that I'm defending Microsoft or anything, but the article posted mentions that the remotes were limited edition, meaning that eventually they would run out. Although this just gives them something to hide behind and I'm almost certain that their defense is going to be "It was limited edition, and we ran out. Sorry."
I haven't been keeping up much on this Xbox 360 thing, but I'm very surprised to know that it's STILL difficult to get one. This has to be the worst example of distribution that I've ever seen. Either that, or it's the worst and most blatant example of manufacturing an artificial demand to move more units that I've ever seen. Seriously, Bill Gates should be ashamed of himself especially for this. And it just affirms that fact that I won't be shelling out any money to buy one of these over-hyped pieces of crap. |

Well... they did say it was "limited edition" but it's the exact same one you can buy in the store for $30. So why can't they keep putting them in?
B/c they don't want to lose anymore money. This is a decision that was made... they didn't "run out." They just made the decision to screw over the other people that preordered and haven't gotten one b/c they have run into manufacturing problems. |

Ahhh....alas the plot thickens. See, as I said, I haven't been keeping up with this much, so thank you Shino for pointing this out, as I did not know otherwise. If you can buy this thing from the store, then it's exactly as you said...Microsoft trying not too lose money while simultaneously screwing over everyone who preordered one of these.
Although, I must say, I can't really hold Microsoft SOLELY responsible for what's going on. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that so gamers are ravenous about this thing and are willing to spend any amount of money and do stupid things like stand outside Best Buy for hours and hours just to have one. And Microsoft knows this, so they purposely produce only a small quantity to keep the public salivating and foaming at the mouth trying to get one. Ours is a culture that needs to learn how to say "No" once in a while. |

The sad fact here is that it probably isn't Microsoft trying to avoid losing money, as much as not losing profit.
I don't know if you guys are UK or US, but in the UK just enough of the populous know how to say 'No', but they say it in the wrong place. They will make a retail monkey's life hell. The retail monkey will have a bad day, complain to their boss. The boss will see that they still need thei pay check, and the manufacturers don't get any real negative feed back.
Plans like this get my back up so much, because its not the people who made the decision who have to have a bad day after getting their bonuses for meeting/exceeding targets. Its the consumers who have to shell out $30/£20/what-have-you for an accessory that probably cost pennies to make. And the guys who deal directly with consumers who have to explain how they're getting screwed, but are contractually obliged to not say why.

I agree with you on most of your points Bob.
First... those of us who have posted in this thread so far are US. However there are plenty of UK people on this site.
Also, for this case, it is about losing less money. MS is losing about $126 per system right now. However that will have dropped now that the remote is not in there.
I'm still not sure why they would pull it out considering it probably only affects their losses by a few bucks. |

I didn't realise that, I should have read up on it more.
Consoles are generally a sold at a loss/lower profit margin and the licencing of games brining in the big bucks for the cash.
Maybe as you and Ming have said : they thought people would just bite the bullet, and only make drone level personell deal with flak, and they would make the money. I think its more than just a a couple of bucks. They spend less (manufacture and shipping * units sold worldwide) and most of the people will buy the remote at retail price... cutting the loss again.
It make good business sense in a souless corporation kind of way.

I think the sad truth is, that Sony will screw the consumers just as hard. Christmas 2004, they distributed no where near enough units of slimline PS2... then jacked up the prices as the deadline drew in, still failing to meet demand by a long shot (partly due to arranging false demand, partly becuse they messed up on customs document... or so the rumors in the retail side would have us believe). |

You make good points Bob. I agree that there will probably not be enough PS3 to meet the demand.
However I do have some hope... as there WERE enough PSPs. Granted, the PS3 will be much more in demand than the PSP, but hopefully they will have at least 500,000 for each region at release. |

Actually, it is not the same remote. The limited edition one does not have all the same buttons and features.
I love how this remote has a "Live TV" and "guide" button in it, yet it has no ability to switch from TV to Video, no way to switch from the XBox to the TV, and such. The only thing this thing is good for is playing DVDs...something I do not use my 360 for.
Kinda of a waste...really. I only used it once, and that was to test the DVD player. |
