Bush backs Dubai port deal

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Not just that article in particle, but the whole situation. If you approve or dissapprove and your reasons why. I'm thinking in a forum such as this, most people are going to have relatively the same opinion.

I don't want to be the first to voice my opinion, so go ahead, and I'll plug mine in later. I didn't want to put this in Soap Box because I wasn't ranting about anything really related to me. So yeah. :]

To be honest I don't really care.

But I was listening to NPR earlier and they were talking about this. They expect this bill to be destroyed when it comes up in congress. So it will probably never pass.

I am never in favor of giving up US property... then again i'm also not a fan of team America world police.
I feel somwhat conflicted over it, namely because i could see it ending up like the Panama Canal fiasco, but then again i think America should leave other countries to deal with their own issues and having ports in other countries encourages intervention on behalf of American intrest... really i need to research it more before i can come to a clear stance.

The US is not giveing up anything.
Right now the ports are regulated by a UK firm. This bill would put a UAE based company in charge of its regulation.

So they are still US controlled ports regarless, its just a matter of who over see's them

Basically this wouldn't be an issue if more than 5% of the cargo was actually scanned before entering the country.

Congress is afraid of all Arabs and Bush is basically saying we can't just cut ties with Arab nations because WE suck at inspecting cargo. So instead of halting the deal we'll probably just end up upping port security.

Haha. That's what I was thinking, Gaaz. It'd be a nice way of getting the US ports to straighten up, even though I really don't think the UAE is going to do anything bad. << But we've all been wrong before.

And besides, it's being racist, in a way, to not put through a deal like this just because it's an Arab nation that has had terrorists originate from it. :[ My dad's done a lot of business in Dubai, and they're wonderful businessmen. But, meh, yeah. My train of thought derailed. Anyways.

I believe I'm with GAAZ, if we inspected more cargo, it would be a safe bet.

But here's my idea: You can't live in fear forever. Not every Muslim wants to kill us, believe it or not. If you can scan cargo for those off chances, and keep this inspected and on the safe side, I think it would be a great gesture in our favor to Arab nations, and also, possibly bring a lot more buisness to help a slow economy. Who knows? All we can do is let Dubyuh hold the wheel, and hold our breath...
