Ratchet & Clank PS3-bound
Online is Key!
This is a good summary of Sony's Keynote address.
The online info is getting more and more intersting to me...
Quote: | In a thinly veiled swipe at Xbox Live, which does not support third-party servers, Harrison said Sony is adopting an "open Internet business philosophy" for the PSNP. Specifically, he said this was done to encourage "makers of massively multiplayer online role-playing-game-type products" to integrate into the network. Later, he would hold up the wildly popular MMORPG World of Warcraft, which boasts more than 6 million subscribers, as a paradigm. "If World of Warcraft were a country, it would be bigger than Ireland," said Harrison. "That's what we would like to achieve in terms of community."
Using the mention of community as another segue, Harrison presented several slides that showed the interface of the PSNP. Using the PS3 game Formula 1 as a backdrop, he showed how up to three simultaneous video chat windows could pop up during gameplay via a minimalist, translucent heads-up display (HUD). Later slides showed how a player could send messages, check e-mail, scour friends lists, and send game requests all while in-game--and all using the same translucent HUD architecture.
Moving on to commerce, Harrison displayed the first shots of the PSNP store, which can also be accessed in-game. He showed a mockup of a menu offering an additional racetrack that players could buy, again using the same translucent design as the communication HUD. He then showed how the PSNP store menu could be customized to match the look of a game with a slide of a car being bought in Motorstorm. The menu featured the same bold yellow design as the off-road racing game's logo, but retained the same elements as the other store menu. |
It's not surprising that after the initial announcement of Sony's intent to allow 3rd party servers into their network which came last week... M$ is now thinking of letting 3rd party servers into the Live network as well. |

Those jerks, I mean...this is -nothing- like how Sony decided to have downloads of their old games after Nintendo announced their virtual library of games thing. Or Sony working on their Sony Aliveandupinyaface online program.
It doesn't really matter honestly. If it's something customers will want, you can bet the other companies are going to pillage it. Much like pretty much every innovation Nintendo made got jacked (analog, rumble, etc). Just the way business works. If you build it, others will steal it. |

That was kinda my point Ultrawolf.
Everyone always gets on Sony for copying others, but I hardly ever hear anyone get on the others doing it.
So here is MS copying Sony.
It's a part of the business. That was my point. |

Oh I know, Pretty much all companies do it.
I guess I should have tossed in more examples.
Everyone screws each other constantly, which in some twisted way is actually a good thing because it encourages competition and provided the best possible product. Sure you can copy someone else's work but unless you have the drive to push those ideas to their limit, you won't ultimately come out with a superior product. |

Very true. I'm looking forward to this generation b/c it seems as if MS and Sony are pretty much on a level playing field.
I know I will be on PSN. Live is still up in the air. I was never on it with the original Xbox b/c they really don't have enough games out that interest me.
The 360 may change that when the flood comes in. We will see.
Nintendo has their Keynote today, so I will probably be posting some fo that info later today.
MS is not making a keynote. |

I think one of Sony's strengths last generation was that they had such wide diversity in titles. You had pretty much every Genre you wanted, and you had excellent titles for alot of those genres (as well as a lot of crapola). I was really attracted to the Xbox live program but like you mentioned Shino, there just wasn't enough Live titles that appealed to -me- personally. There were alot of good games, just not ones -I- was interested in. I don't think Xbox was that well rounded last generation, I think that if they were, they could have plundered those like myself sitting on the fence. |

Same here. I got an Xbox when they put out the package that had Sega GT and Jet Set Radio Future in it. As those were 2 of the like 4 titles I was interested in at the time.
I was disappointed by both of them.
KOTOR is awesome. I have both of those
I have Burnout 3 and Revenge
Jedi Academy
And that's about it. |

I only have XBox Live (the old one) for two things: PSO and DDR Ultramix 3. Then again, once I beat KOTOR II those will be about the only things I even have my *XBox* for... |

Looks like the Nintendo Keynote is focusing on the DS.
Mainly online play and the new Brain Age "game."
Umm... how about some Rev news man. What the hell.
We know about the DS already. |
