Peoples stupidity never ceases to amaze me.
http://www.local6.com/news/5497816/detail.html#
The 3 mangas the lady is holding are Peach Girl rated 13+, MARS rated 13+, and Marmalade Boy rated 13+. If she dosen't want her kid reading them check out some picture books for her. Jeez this has to be the most stupidest thing ever. Hate to see what she would do if she found a real adult manga on the shelf! Bah. lol The kids 11 it's nothing worse than the things she probably see's on the t.v. In fact it's probably tamer. Hahah
I know the article is old Dec 2005 but still. =P |

I didn't really like MARS anyway...So they probably should stop her from reading it. ^_^
The mom does know that every library has an "Adult Contemporary" section IE...Word Porn. Like "Sex on the Bounty" or "Lay me Now my Sweet Justice." |

Another reason why I keep insisting that the library is not a safe place for your children! There is a very real possibility that a book in the library could contain ideas that you don't want your child to know - the only way to ensure they don't get to it is to be with them at all times.
Beyond that point, though, the library is committed to having a diverse amount of materials. There will be at least one person that every book in this collection offends. Deal with it. |

This is another case of bad parenting more than anything else. If you care that much about what your kid is reading, maybe you should be there when she checks out the books at the library, and have a look at it before she does, eh?
If you don't care, then there's no harm. |

The main difference between this and the library is that there IS an Adult Contemporary section.... but you're not going to get that with manga.
Hey, I'm a parent... I don't want my kids to go to the comic book section, see a cutsey manga cover and then open it up to see b00bles, drug reference and gay pr0n.
They're not seeing it due to bad parenting or anything like that... it's because it's misleading. Peach girl is often times right next to Pokemon. |

People are sometimes very ignorant and assume all comics and 'cartoons' are for kids, and so place them all together - thus resulting with the problem here. Basically, it's really the library's fault for not being responsible and having an adult section for the manga / checking the content or at least, know it's themes before stocking them with other Manga.
This sort of lack of responsibilty and eagerness to shift the blame, gives mangas and comics a bad rep. U___U
I think the mother did slightly over-react with the manga in question - but at least she checked what her kid was reading. That isn't bad parenting. |

I'm with Yunni on this one - this seems like a watered-down version of the "Demon Beast Invasion" incident in Texas - manga obviously labeled "Teen" stuck in with everything else.
Then again, even funnier - my local MovieStop won't sell (or buy) Hentai, but apparently Fritz the Cat is A-OK... |

It may very well be misfiled if it's in a "youth" section, but remember that most libraries organize by type first and subsections later. If the librarian had time to read every book that came in, then s/he could file them all with a better idea of content inside. There isn't really enough time for that. I suppose I'm just annoyed that people think it's the librarian's job to make sure the kids don't check out anything their parents wouldn't like. It's not. In some senses, the librarian's job is to make sure that the kids can check out things their parents don't like or approve of. (is it showing that I'm going to school to be a librarian yet?) The responsibility ultimately still falls to the parent to know what their child is reading. There will be dangerous books in a library - a parent accepts that risk when they bring their child in. |

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.
On a slight tangent, when I was a kid my Mom would check what kinds of video games I was buying to make sure that I wasn't playing any M-Rated games or even Teen games before I was of age. While I was a kid, I was a bit upset at her for doing that, but In hindsight I'm really glad she did because I realize that she actually took an interest in what I was playing and didn't want me to get exposed to all sorts of crazy. So I would give this parent a Gold Star...but I do agree she overreacted so...Maybe Next time. |

Of course. However I'd assume a library would know what the basic theme their stock has and place them appropriatly - so when a person goes to check-out the book, it would show up on the database what section it's from? These days, I'd assume that wouldn't be hard to do... but ah well. |
