I went into the security tab on my hard drive to find out that... Everyone had Full Control on it.
No separation in groups or admins or anything. Absolutely any user who was logged in could do whatever he wanted with the computer. And it was on both of my Win2K machines.
Now, I'm wondering, was it that way by default, or did I get pwned by hackers and found out way too late? |

I don’t know about full control but the Everyone group should have at least read & execute permissions by default. On XP that is the way it is setup. On 2000 Everyone might have full control to the root. And just because they have full access that does not mean that they have full permissions to the whole drive. Permissions can be setup for each individual group. The group "Everyone" should not have access to your Windows directory as well as the users personal directories. If they have access to those directories than you know you have a problem. |

After some talking with my teacher, I finally found out that Windows 2K Pro has absolutely no set permissions by default. Everyone has full access and control over everything on the drive. Which makes me question what the hell were the devs thinking when they set that... >_> |

Perhaps they were thinking at some point that they would just need to take over everyone's computer and search them for pirated copies? |

Nah, this is their Skynet initiative.
If anyone would sell humanity over to the machines, It's Microsoft.
Although I agree with Shuri, those developers must have been smokin' some peace pipe. |

2K Pro is designed to run in a domain environment, meaning it gets all it's settings and permissions through group policy set by the domain controller. If you're using Win 2K Pro in a home environment as many of us have, the default settings will be wide open. |

It's for full customizability, if its in a business evironment of course the permissions are going to be setup as soon as the OS is up and running and it makes it easier by having just the one setting when it starts out. |
