Sex and drugs noticeably absent, but Harmonix sequel promises plenty more rock and roll later this year.

If there's one lesson to take away from the Rolling Stones' four-decade-long career, it's that rock and roll will never, ever die. As such, when RedOctane and Harmonix Music's runaway hit Guitar Hero stormed stores last year and established a groupie-like fan base of virtual Vais, pseudo Satrianis, and make-believe Malmsteens, a sequel was as inevitable as another aborted Van Halen reunion.

RedOctane today confirmed the band was indeed getting back together, as it announced that Guitar Hero II would arrive on the PlayStation 2 this November. While the song list hasn't been announced yet, the publisher confirmed that there would be more than 55 tracks in dire need of shredding. There's also a multiplayer co-op mode that will let players collaborate, each playing lead, rhythm, or bass guitar portions.

And in case devoted fans feared that the series would stray too far from the musical genre that spawned it, RedOctane has promised that the tracks would be the same mix of classic, alternative, and modern rock, with additional entries from hair metal and heavy metal.

RedOctane has confirmed that the sequel will be compatible with the original game's guitar peripheral, and that it will give the world its first glimpse of the game at next month's Electronics Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Guitar Hero II Due This Fall (PS2)
RedOctane makes an official announcement.
By Li C. Kuo | April 17, 2006

Now you've got a whole new reason to make like Jimi Hendrix and rock out all over again. This morning RedOctane, the same guys who brought us the original Guitar Hero, officially announced Guitar Hero II. That's right. Guitar Hero II. Take a few seconds to collect yourself, we're not going anywhere.

Okay, now that you've calmed down, here's a whole set of reasons to get worked-up again. More than 55 songs will be included in the upcoming sequel, 40 of which will be licensed; the rest will be independent stuff. No, we don't have a song list just yet because it's still being finalized, and licensing deals are always a touchy subject. What we can confirm is that the mix of genres will stay the same, meaning you'll get classic rock, heavy metal, modern rock, alternative, and "hair" metal. Also, the game will use the same guitar peripheral you use to play the original game with.

Wannabe rockers who own two guitar controllers will get to play a completely new cooperative mode with their buddies, where one player will simply play the lead guitar track while the other handles either the bass or rhythm tracks. Don't worry, the classic multiplayer modes you've already mastered will be in the sequel as well. Enhancements and tweaks to the single-player game are expected too, but info is scarce for now.

The current release date for Guitar Hero II is scheduled for this fall. We'll keep you updated as new details come out.

Woo! I'm looking forward to the new multiplayer modes.

Guitar Hero III! Announced

They need some Van Halen, Whitesnake, and Foreigner.

Some other people too but we mostly need more hair bands.

Oh yea, I was dissapointed they didn't have any Guns N Roses in the first game, but I was happy about Spanish Castle Magic. I'm sure there'll be more Hendrix this time around, but I hope they can snag the lyrics this time.

Also Interview with Executive Producer on Guitar Hero Deux

I'm disappointed to see that the new controller will only have four buttons plus the "plunge bar". Seems like they're going to dumb down GH3...

And does anyone else hope that GH2 (or maybe the real 3) might see the inclusion of a real training mode (a la Every Other Music Game In Existence)? I highly doubt a real guitarist practices a difficult part of a song by starting every time from the top and crapping out if he screws up...
