According to EGM's Rumors section, Nintendo is working on a Mother 1-3 (Mother 2 = Earthbound in the USA) compilation for the Nintendo DS complete WITH Touch Screen features. I think if it's true, it could easily translate to the DS. Menu options on the bottom screen, game on the top. Easy as pie, not alot of hard work.
I don't have a scan handy (since I didn't actually BUY the magazine) but I'm sure one will pop up sooner or later or it'll get posted on IGN or Gamespot or something. Anywho, as it is only a rumor, take it with a grain of salt. However, It would seem likely that Nintendo releases all three titles on one DS cartridge as a way of mitigating losses. One of the biggest factors going against Mother 3 in America is the fact that Mother 2/Earthbound never sold well (I blame the oversized box packed in with the strategy guide). However by releasing all three titles Nintendo can cash in on Ness/Super Smash fans while also treating us hardcore Mother fiends who they've neglected for so long. (Over 10 years my friends). This way they don't take a hit if one of the games tanks here.
It's the same logic used to bring Phoenix Wright over. Nintendo was unsure of Phoenix' marketability so they ported one of his GBA games to the DS which sells games like mad. Way of testing the waters I guess. On a tangent I think that the market for quirky games has changed over the years. A game like Katamari Damacy might not have performed so well 10 years ago. Japanese culture has flourished over the years, and I think it's safe to say that more offbeat and original titles will start to emerge again.
Back on track, Rumors are rumors. From what I've heard though, Quarterman (EGM's Rumors writer) is usually pretty accurate. He predicted a Japanese release of Mother 1+2 on GBA, one year later it happened. He predicted Guitaroo Man Lives game, it happened (sorta). So I don't know, I can't really say, but it would be a nice thing if it happened. And I hope if it does turn out to be true, then I encourage all of you to buy it and support the release of more overseas titles in America. We're Ready Japan. |

Nah. We got Phoenix Wright, and Earthbound was at least a cult hit...I'd say that it's a distinctive possibility. |
