Though it was the centerpiece of Microsoft's E3 2005 press briefing, the Xbox 360 edition of Final Fantasy XI hasn't really taken off. As of the end of May 2006, the next-gen console edition of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game has sold just 72,194 copies in the US, according to the NPD group.
FFXI's lackluster showing on the 360 is in large part due to the fact that the game has been available on the PC and PlayStation 2 since 2003 and 2004, respectively. Now, though, it appears that an all-new FFXI is in the works for Microsoft's next-gen console--as well as its prime competitor.
According to a Monday report on Nikkei.net, "Square Enix will develop a sequel to Final Fantasy XI ... for three platforms: Sony Computer Entertainment’s next-generation PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and the Windows Vista PC operating system."
The Nikkei report was short on details, containing neither a release date nor an official title for the FFXI sequel. Attempts to contact American Square Enix reps for clarification and confirmation had gone unanswered as of press time. However, as Windows Vista won't be available until 2007, the PC edition of the game would likely not launch until next year--at the earliest. |

Actually there are a lot of rumors about the possibility of an MMO based on the Mana series, so it's not too far fetched. |

How many people need to die before you're happy UW?
FFXI killed off a dying series.
After Sword of Mana and that game that was kinda like Dark Cloud for Mana it's the next dying series.
An MMO will kill it completely! *cries* I miss you Secret of (not sucking) Mana! |

Legend of Mana was the one that was kinda like Dark Cloud. Was my favorite of the Mana series too, followed by the original.
I know Mana's getting a boost in the series. Children of Mana is coming out for the DS in late October-early November. And Dawn of Mana (ps2) is going to come out after that.
From what I hear, Dawn of Mana goes back to the old storyline and works off of that, instead of going for its own like Legend. This one's also 3D, which kinda bothers me because even Legend (PSOne) kept to the oldschool artstyle. I'm still looking forward to Dawn though.
Haven't heard anything about an MMO though. If they do, the -only- saving grace for the unavoidable MMO suckiness is to stay with the old artstyle and the old world. Also, being able to have a Rabite would be cool. |
