So lately, i've been listening to a type of music id like to deem "Epic Music."

This music is usually power-metal that is VERY fast paced. The thing about it is that the lyrics for it are usually very focused on fantasy or fiction. I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything else from anyone else. So far, i've been listening to two bands in particular, the first being Rhapsody, who incorporate metal with classical music and produce a flowing storyline engaging a character called the Warrior of Ice with a continuing storyline, which continues through each CD. The second band is a more of a general fictional band called Dragonforce. These guys just focus on blasting hard-metal and producing some very interesting sounds on the guitar (Much of it sounds like videogame music...its silly, like you're in a megaman game.)

Anywho, anyone else know of any other bands that do similar music?

I'll recommend a few, myself.

  • Blind Guardian - especially the album Nightfall in Middle-Earth, which is essentially the first half of the Silmarillion.
  • Iced Earth - Best recommends from me are Dark Saga (based on Spawn), Alive in Athens (great live album), and Horror Show (songs based on classic horror villains).
  • Demons & Wizards - Pretty much the band from Iced Earth with the lead singer from Blind Guardian. Some of the songs on their self-titled debut are a bit slower, but very nice (Fiddler on the Green comes to mind).

I just got into Rhapsody myself - never could get into them with the "Ee-mer-ahld S-wo-rd" pronunciations. But when I heard the flute solo from "Sacred Power of Raging Winds", I started listening again.

I've been listening to Dragonforce also, I'll try out those other bands.

Myself and Chixie might be going to see Dragonforce in December, if funds allow and someone on my side of the family can look after Rachael for a while seeing as we're planning to go see them at one of my old haunts ROCK CITY!!!!!!!!!!

Luca Turilli from RHAPSODY did a solo album called King of the Nordic Twilight and continued that story with Prophet of the Last Eclipse. There's one called Demonheart that might have come out before those two, but I don't know.

Just in case y'all didn't know.

Tsk tsk. How could you people not mention Manowar? Almost all of their songs are about warriors, vikings, and stuff like that. One song in particular is quite unique. Defender. It's got Orson Wells! He apparently liked these guys and did a couple of recordings for them. Besides Defender, he also does the intro that they still use to this day. All hail Manowar!

Another good band is Savatage. They don't do alot of fantasy stuff, but they have one album that's all about it. It's called Hall of the Mountain King.

Yeah, how could you not have love for the loudest band on Earth. And as the song says, "Other bands play, Manowar kills!" The Kings of Metal CD is awesome with songs like Heart of Steel, Kingdom Come, Hail and Kill, and Sting of the Bumblebee. Also the Warrior's Prayer story on there is kick ass.

You may also like Hammerfall. I forget the name of the CD, but they've got some good songs like End of the Rainbow and The Fallen One (which brings a tear to my eye)

Also try Helloween. Not really Epic Metal, but have the same sort of pacing. Keeper of the Seven Keys I & II are awesome albums, as is Better Than Raw. O Lavdate Dominum is a great song that's all in Latin, so it kind of feels like fantasy even though it is a prayer. Eagle Fly Free, Rise and Fall, Dr. Stein, and I Can are all good songs too. They also have these wicked instrumental introes for each of their CDs which is what I like about them. All music needs more instrumentals.

So there's my two cents. Rock on metal warrior!
