For those of you familiar with the X-men, remember how every time Jubilee would touch something technological (before she could control her abilties) she blew it up?

...Yeah, apparently that's me.

Just before the school year started in the Fall (IE: Around end of July beginning-mid August) there were all those horrible lightning storms, and one of them fried poor Drizzt's harddrive. I'd only gotten Drizzt maybe half a year before that at the most (I can't remember, too long ago. XD), and Semhirhage had been running properly ever since her harddrive fried less than a year after I got -her- (during my senior year of high school, just after I'd finished the huge senior term paper I had to do for my English course so that I could re-write the whole bloody thing).

So we get Drizzt a new harddrive and, no kidding, a week later his motherboard or something that nobody ever bothered properly explaining to me got fried by -another- storm. It'll cost enough to replace that my parents say "What the Hell" and instead of having "Uncle Mikey" (my dad's best friend who has a business repairing computers) fix it I'm to get a laptop, since that way I can easily transfer data from my house to Shino's given how frequently I move between the two.

My dad forgets to tell "Uncle Mikey" about this and he ends up repairing Drizzt and I get the new laptop. As it turns out, Drizzt's video card must've been messed up during the storm as well, but it runs allright so nobody really cares except my sister as I decide to let her use it until she can get a new laptop (since hers is broken).

At any rate, then I have Suki, and Suki works well other than refusing to read disks every so often....until yesterday when -she- gives out and apparently -her- hard-drive is fried...taking with it the 6000+ words of Eternus Infinuum, the profile for Shandriz I'd been working on for PO, and tons of other data that can be more easily replaced but will still be a pain in the arse to do so.

Oh, and I have a paper due at 12:45 today...and had nothing to write it on yesterday...plus class from 9:45 until 11:00. So, -if- I can manage to write a 500 word interview in an hour and a half (as we must allow time for me to leave my first class and get to my second class) I'm still lucky that it's only the rough draft that's due today and that the final draft isn't due until Tuesday. It's still very inconvenient either way.

I frikkin' hate technology. I've never really trusted it-- most of my files -are- backed up on the internet somewhere because I'm afraid of losing the information. I never do PowerPoint projects because inevitably something will go wrong with them. And I -despise- how technologically centered society has become. You can't turn in papers hand-written anymore. You will get -crucified- if it's not typed up these days, even if you do have legible handwriting.

It's ridiculous that my entire college career hangs on the one thing that keeps FAILING ME.

Grar.

Eeek. Sorry that technology's not being kind to you. All I can offer is the hope that those were all just lemons, and that you'll get a good batch soon.

Ha. That doesn't even take into account the fact that my car's been in the shop three times in as much time as I've been having computer troubles, there's been two bouts of school tuition (though, fortunately, I have my loan back) and books...Suffice it to say I'm costing my parents a fortune and since I can't work while I'm in school I can't give anything back.

I feel like -shit- right now, and if it weren't for the fact that I have to give a presentation in Mythology tonight I'd be at home buried under the covers.

I gave up on using PCs. I live off my laptop at home and love it so much that I'm seriously considering getting another one. I can get some good prices for Compaqs via corporate agreements.

We get a good share of power surges at home to where a bunch of the power sockets are blown out.

DLOE's computer is so powerful that it even shorts out itself sometimes.

*nods* that's what happened to Drizzt. Twice. Blew out the harddrive the first time and the motherboard the second, I think.

And now Suki's harddrive is gone, and perhaps something else as well. Who knows? Suki is a laptop, though, so this had nothing to do with the bloody storms. I have -no- idea how she died considering she's still so young.

I advise driving to a local Best Buy and looking at the external backup drives. You can usually find a 100GB for around $100. It is well worth the money if you have multiple comps and said comps like to 'spread' said data all over the floor. Just a though.

...if I had the $100 I'd think about it, but honestly, with no job and none likely until I graduate (as I can't seem to handle doing both) I have no funds. That's why there's an issue with whether or not I can even replace the parts/get a new laptop if it's necessary.

I have issues with technology too. People I work with get irritated because the portable phone dies when I have it within 20 minutes. The computers have mroe errors while I'm there than when I'm not. And the STUPID color matchign machine has only ONCE worked for me properly. Everythign else comes otu too dark, even with recalibrating.

And ym computer at home had to be rebuilt in June, and then my honey was trying to fix it in September and it died again. (apparently he irritated whatever its issue was) and just a week or so ago (only a little over a month after he brought me a NEW computer), this one quit lettign me see my desktop. It wasn't refreshing properly for some reason, still dont' know why. It's all better now though. For teh moment. Now it's just slooooooooooooooooow.

Maybe you should get low tech. Get you an older laptop thats been wiped down to the bare essentials and a word processing program. No software to glitch out. Dont get on the internet with it, have it be your dedicated word processor.

Maybe look at automatic document backup freeware, but thats as far as Id go. Sorry things are working out bad for you. I sympathise, when you write a good bit, and lose it, you feel so crushed. Then when you rewrtie it...its just not the same.

Not surprised, that box has more money in lighting effects than in RAM, I swear. Rolleyes

Almost as good, the night before last, my tire busted, the spare busted, and the oil light came on while I was idling it to keep the heater running.

When the towtruck got to me and loaded my car up to tow it home, I figured that was the end of the problems. As soon as I got in the truck, his CB radio died. Halfway home, the GPS started flickering, and died. As we pulled up to the driveway, his engine started cutting in and out, like the alternator was having problems...

As soon as I got out of the cab, the engine problems stopped and the GPS came back on... Shocked I have tech gremlins.
