Warning, This is way too long for anyone to read. and ill understand if you dont, this is mostly for me, but you might find some of my commentary interesting
Well, as many of you dont know, I am currently employed at a Subway Resturant franchise, and as with any job it comes with its little annoyances.
This will be a rant to blow off a little steam so i dont smack anyone in the store, I rather like my job, its easy, i get paid a reasonable amount(in proportion to my responsibilities, i have one of the best owners of any franchise), and all but one of the people I work with are intelegent and fun to be around. I'd rather not be fired for assulting someone with a footlong meatball...
anyway, most of these little annoyances arent that big a deal, most are more funny than wrath inspiring, but it gets old...
I find most of these pronunciations more funny than anything else
Subway pronunciation guide
Italian: Ih tal yon, not I tal yon
Parmesan: its par muh zhan. not par me ze anne
Oregano: this is also often pronounced like the state of Oregon with an O sound after it... Its pronounced uh re guh no.
(These two are often combined to order a bread that no subway I know of stocks, Par me ze anne Or ee gone O bread.)
Meatball Marinara: I have had somone order Meatball Mary-Anna. I do not use humans in my meatball sauce, I'm preaty sure thats illegal...
Mayonnaise: Subway Stocks a very common white sauce called mayonnaise, or mayo. We do not have marinade, you need to go to a grocery store for that. Also, there is no such thing a Marannaise, as far as i can tell, it is a mixture of marinara sauce and mayonnaise... not a sauce we carry... though if you want it i guess i could put some mayo on your marinara sauce...
Southwest Chipotle: There are to many misspronunciations of this to list, but a few miss pronuciations of this sauce are understandable, like chih poh tul close but not quite, chih pot ul, also close but not quite, and Chih pol tea, close, but there is an L in there, the proper way to pronounce it is Chi poht ley. The inexcusable way to pronounce it is Chip and Dale sauce, I will under no circumstances wear a bow tie and strip while making your sandwich....
So if you order a Meatball Mary-Anna on par me ze anne Oregon O bread with maranaise and Chip and Dale sauce (has happend before) Dont be suprised when I laugh at you...
Various other pet peaves
The Uhm Uhm Uhm sandwhich: Thats not a sandwich i know how to make. If you dont know what you want, please stand back and let others go in front of you, This is more a cortesy for the people behind you than us, but if you dont piss off the other customers they dont take it out on us.
The whats good today: The only things that realy change in quality day by day are the meatballs and the tuna, somepeople make them badly, I'll admit that, so a good question to ask is, "Is the tuna good today?" but the turkey is prepackaged and tastes the same every day...
The Fresh Bread: This is quite an understandable concern, I would want my bread fresh as well, but dont ask to feel the bread.... we cant let you do that... as long as the subway is reletivly busy, bread is probably baked every 4 hours or so, and is generaly speaking fresh. If the bread is stale, dont eat it, bring it back, and we will be happy to make you another one.
The Monstrosity: you cannot have a sandwich with all the meats... just no
The Office run: If you are ordering more than 4 sandwiches please call it in, we would like to have some warning, and likewise the people behind you in line will appriciate it.
The note: Do not hand me and envelope/post-it/napkin/peice of paper with your order on it unless you are a mute (in which case i will gladly oblige you). I am not allowed to touch it, otherwise i would need to change my gloves, also, I dont want to spend time trying to decifer your chicken scratch because your too lazy to read it to me.
The Bus boy: While I dont expect you to sweep up after yourself, please be aware that everything you drop and or leave on the table I have to clean up. please dont spread your lettuce over the floor with your olive slices in a grizzly mosaic of vegitables.
The Late night snack: It is very impolite to bang on the door after we are closed, or call after we are closed to try to order a sandwich. It is also frowned upon to come in 1 minute to close to order your sandwich. there are alot of things that need to be cleaned after close and there is often only one person to do it, when combined with The Uhm Uhm Uhm sandwich it can be very madening indeed. Do not be suprised when I ask you not to sit at the table to eat your sub when it is time to close either.
The burger and fries: Yes, its been done before and no, its not funny this time either...
The Great Divide: I would be glad to cut your foot long in halves, and, I would cut your footlong in thirds even, and posibly even fourths. Please dont ask for your 6 inch to be cut in to four seperate peices, wrapped seperatly, and put in four seperate bags... thats just plain annoying
The audio apocalipse: Please use a normal voice when ordering a sub, there is no need to yell at me, i have feelings too... On the other hand, i cannot hear wispers very well, and if i ask what kind of bread you want 3 times, you may need to speak up.
Well, this has been a long and perilous journy, and if your reading this, thanks for sticking it out. I feel much better, you on the other hand, having read this probably think im crazy, but like I said earlier, this was purly to blow off steam. |

Buda, I was a waiter for a span of about 2 years, so I can relate to pretty much everything that you're talking about. You forgot to mention something though...the people who seem to believe that you are the cause of their day's misery, and so take it upon themselves to share some of that misery with you. How generous of them.
And you should really talk to Tobias, he's been a barista at a Barnes and Noble cafe for probably close to 4 years now. He's got a story for EVERYTHING. |

Yes, misery is a sauce often heaped upon the sandwich of the soulless masses that plage the subway at which I work....
anyway i remember a thread tobs made about a few things that happened there. One day I'm gonne snap, and just start eating someones sandwich, then just walk out with it. (before they pay of course) |

XD! You are not the first person, and most definitely not the last.
A lot of states get mispronounced. It's ar-kan-saw, not ar-kansas; neva ("a" as in cat) duh not nevawduh XD |

Yeppers for me as well. These are where my Southern accent sneak in. I pronounce Oregon correctly but Nevada's still a tossup.
Here's a good one...how do you pronounce "Pecan"---there's a bunch of variation to this so I won't post them.... |

i worked at subway for 3 months.
i couldn't even go into one for 2 YEARS after i quit.
just the smell made me sick.
one time this girl blatantly stole money out of the tip jar. there was a five in it before i went to the back, and when i came back, it was gone. how do you prove it, yah know? and i was there by myself. as usual.
you have my sympathies, hun. write to me anytime you need to vent |
