...is the most boring thing on the face of the Earth.
Those of you who work in offices (and I know that there are at least a few here), how do you get through your day? My company claims that it's busy and has all this work to do, and yet I sit here spinning in my chair for hours a day because I'm done with all my work. And then I wonder how I'm actually getting paid for this. Honestly, I'm a pretty lazy person in general, but this is too much even for me. Never in my life have I ever hoped...no, prayed for more work to do.
I don't understand how people can say that office jobs are "stressful". Unless stress can be a result of having nothing to do all day. I think it's just the corporate world trying to justify that it's more important than it actually is.
"No physical laborers of the world....don't laugh at us because we wear funny clothes and sit on our asses all day staring at computer screens. We have job related danger just like you! I mean, with all the paper that we have to file, there are impending paper cuts of DOOM around every corner! Not to mention stapler-related accidents and coffee burns! And don't get me started about office-related depression!"
Seriously...WTF? |

Depends on the type of office. I work for a telephone company, so we ARE busy all the time. Plus, I have built in entertainment in the funny girl in the cube next to me. I have discovered that feeding her jellybeans will make her hyper and spacy, and she just jabbers on and on. It's great. On top of jellybeans, she had coffee this morning too, so I'm not exactly doing her a favor.
She can't drink Red Bull becaus she's extremely sensitive to the caffeine. She was shaking one day because she had had a Red Bull for the first time ever. Then, she had another one a few days later. IT's great. Plus the whole entertaining thing regarding the team lead, and the report guy.
We've just gone insane. |

As soon as I saw this topic, I knew you started it!! I worked in an office for a couple of summers and we were relatively busy, but some times it got SOOOO BORING! All I can say is thank god for the internet!! What did people do before it!

I worked in a government office for 8 months, very laid back. I passed the time with digg, fark, a ds, a psp, and occasionally making a zombie plan. |

My job's boring as all hell. But at least in this one, the boss isn't right around the corner so I can basically do whatever I want.
My last job with the same company was busy and boring hell where they'd find you more work to do and the boss was just a few strolls away from you.
I've been in corporate for nearly 5 years now (2 departments, same company)...I don't think its nearly as busy as its cracked up to be...but then again, some ppl do a lot more running around than I do. I write proposals, and I'm efficient about doing it. I can crank my part out in a day or 2 that takes my coworkers 2 weeks. I seriously don't know what they stress over all day.
That's why I have so much time to be on PO...and to "work from home" to where I don't even ask for time off except for holidays. |

| whenever i end up doing the office work it is a funny thing. i have been working shop floors for almost 2.5 years now and paper cuts have nothing on a slipped file and 6061-T6 Aluminum opening a finger before you know what is going on...till there is the blood. the office work is mundane as you line up work for the shop workers and income but then there is when you mess up on a design....and the resulting boom or grinding sound as the tool/machine crashes. hell with a waterjet cutter a clog in that could produce a crater as all the energy of the water is released at once. my last foreman who ran the waterjet had his desk on the floor near the garnet tank and the water jet. should one fuck up happen....shrapnel. dont get me started on the proximity to the welding dept and the gas tanks there...nothing OSHA bad but general danger that is always there is very obvious. |

It really depends on the office.
For me, I have enough work to last me a while. Just about all the time.
Merge that with being the most senior developer on our team, many come to me with questions. Especially when we get new contractors in. I probably spend 1/2 my day helping other people with stuff. |

Depends on the companies. My company does insurance, which doesnt sound very exciting...except we deal with bonds and surety insurance. We have to heavily pay attention to laws, current and pending, to make sure that we don't accidently break any. We also have to be very aware of deadlines. We have to make $500K tax payments sometimes, and maybe it is due by Apr 15th, if the payment is not there on time, you can look to pay an additional HUGE sum for a late fee. We have to pay claims on things, and sometimes we have 10 days to get things turned around before WE would be penalized for something, and either taken to court or have to pay a HUGE sum.
There are many things that can create stress in this type of job, not to mention pushy/conceited agents who think they can walk all over you, or accuse you of doing something wrong with your job/calculations, until you have to basically hold thier hands like children to show them you are correct.
Our office is always busy. If its not, then we arent making money lol.
If you finish your work so quick, do you try to pick up something new to learn, or help out a co-worker with something or whatnot, or do you just not care enough to? (just curious) |

I was going to try to explain what I do, but I don't think that I'll be able to do that without writing a novel. Just know that I work for Rupert Murdoch. But basically the problem lies in the fact that, with the exception of several daily tasks that have to take place on specific days, my work is caught up and done for the next 2 weeks. Oh yeah, and there are a few things sitting on my desk to do that I can't complete until either people get back to me or something is fixed (which I don't do). But once I can address them, they'll encompass about 5 minutes of work each. I ask around periodically if there is anything that I can do for anyone, but we're all pretty much in the same boat.
When I worked for Pepsi, it was much of the same thing. People complained "oh how stressful work is!" but I could walk through the halls and see people sitting at their desks spinning in their chairs, seemingly bored of the lack of things to do. The only people there that I really saw doing anything consistently were the scientists and the warehouse staff. |
