Yup yup.

Sony released firmware 1.80 early this morning that has some really cool features in it. Unfortunatly, upscaling 720p only PS3 games for 1080i only HDTVs is not included in this update. Bawl But the other stuff is really freaking cool!

The biggest is that PS1 and PS2 games will now display in resolutions up to 1080p.

DVDs are upscaled as well, but only via HDMI cable. Apparently it's a regulation from the Motion Picture Association of America.

Scalers have been included in the firmware to do this. I haven't tried it yet, but apparently it is quite impressive. Part of me is now glad I haven't started FFXII yet.

Other things included:
- The ability to stream media files from PCs and Laptops to your PS3.
The PS3 will now recognize other computers on the LAN and you can give it the ability to play media files from it. Music, Movies and Photos.

- The ability to stream media files from your PS3 to your PSP anywhere!
Remote access to your PS3 via PSP has now been fully enabled. You can hook to your PS3 from anywhere with a wireless internet connection using your PSP.

- The ability copy PS1 or PS2 data from the PS3 harddrive to a Memory card.
Some of you may or may not know this, but the use of the memory card adaptor for PS3 used to be a read only thing. According to the update, you can now write to the memory cards as well. This is great for back up purposes.

Here's the official release info.

Warning: This update is for customers who own PS3™ systems sold in North America. DO NOT update your PS3™ system through this Web site if you purchased your system outside North America. There is no guarantee of proper operation with other models sold outside North America.

The PLAYSTATION®3 System Software version 1.80 update includes the following:

Upscaling Games and Movies

* SCEA is enhancing the PS3 user experience by enabling PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games to be upscaled to HD resolution, up to 1080p. Classic games as well as recently released titles can now be enjoyed like never before. And PS3 system now has the capability to upscale DVD videos to HD quality (up to 1080p), a feature typically limited to top-of-the-line DVD players. Upscaling games requires an HDMI or component AV cable, while upscaling DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) requires an HDMI cable and HDMI compatible TV set.

Media Content on the Move

* Since November, PS3 owners have been able to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PS3s hard drive to a nearby PSP system. Consumers will soon have the freedom to access this media content wherever and whenever their PSP is connected to a wireless Internet access point. To take advantage of this feature, users will have to update their PSP systems firmware to the next version, 3.50, slated for release next week. Once both systems are updated, consumers can enjoy their entertainment content wherever and whenever wireless Internet access is available, including the 7,000 T-Mobile HotSpot locations across the United States.
* Version 1.80 also allows PS3 users on a home network to stream media content (photos, videos, and music) stored on a DLNA-enabled device onto their PS3 system. DLNA is a system that enables digital devices such as personal computers, DVRs, and TVs to be connected to a network and share data with other connected devices, in this case a PS3 system. This new functionality reinforces the value of PS3 system as a home entertainment hub.

Other Feature Upgrades

* Copying Saved Data to a Memory Card Users can now copy saved data from PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format software stored on their PS3 system to a Memory Card or Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation2), using their PS3 system and a Memory Card Adaptor.
* Photo Printing, Viewing, and Editing The photo capabilities of PS3 system have been enhanced, allowing users to print digital photos stored on a PS3s hard drive or inserted storage media. Currently, select Epson printers connected via USB are compatible. In addition, users will find a new type of slideshow for displaying photos, zoom functionality and the option to crop images.

Sweet if I had a PS3 for the HD PS2 gaming as I can do the HD thing with a PSX emulator on the PC.

Yeah it'll be a bit until you can get a perfect emu for PS2.
Either way, playing games on my TV is more fun to me than on a little 19" or whatever size screen.

Fair enough. But that's your choice. But then you say things like...

the PS3 just seems like a big pile over overpriced hype next to my PC.

Just b/c you won't spend more than $200 on a game system, doesn't mean game systems that are more than that are overpriced. The PS3 costs Sony $840 to make. They sell it for $600. And I would challenge you to build a PC that can do what the PS3 can for < $600.

Sure, the hype is high, but it will start living up to it when Ninja Gaiden and Lair come out next month. Then again in the Fall when it has a bunch of killer apps coming.

I'm glad you're excited about all this. But I, personally, don't see the need for all of that. No offense or anything to anyone...I just think consoles should focus more on gaming and not every other peripheral that gets thrown in there. That's probably one of the reasons I don't play many video games anymore.

Agreed... which is why what I'm most excited about is the improving of the way PS1 and PS2 games play on the machine. Especially since I'm still playing my PS2 games the most.

I may actually retire my PS2 now and just use my PS3

I also use my PS3 as my DVD player right now since my stand alone player broke and the PS3 plays DVDs much better than the 360.

I understand where you're coming from though... you want new games for the system. And I agree. They are really slow with releases right now.

Two big games end of June and July 1, then nothing huge until Sept. But this is normal. Was for the PS2, Xbox, GC, 360, Wii also.

In all reality, the only reason I have one now is because of the backwards compatibility of the model in stores now. I wanted to grab one before they took the Emotion Engine out..

Yeah that's still kinda meh on them taking it out to me... I wish they weren't.

And rmemeber evberyone loose money on hardware the first few years of it's life span.

Also I spent I think about $600 on the current config of my box. It's lasted me way longer than I expected with a minor video card upgrade(which is why it's $600 not $450) and looks about on par if not better than the current batch of 360 and ps3 games.

I'm not sure what you mean.

Not True. Nintendo made money off the Wii from day 1. However, no one has ever taken a hit as big as what Sony is taking on the PS3. $240 on the 60G version, $305 on the 20G version.

Microsoft was losing $126 on the 360 Premium when it first came out. Now thay MAKE $75 on it.

Figuring that, I would expect the PS3 costs to drop in the same fashion. I also expect them to drop the price $100 by Christmas... b/c you are right, it is expensive (but not overpriced). But with that $100 drop in price, they will lose money for even longer... that is if it happens.

I can understand that. I spent $1200 on mine about 5 years ago. Upgrades include Ram and Hand-me-down video cards from people like Osiris and Hoth. Plus the addition of a DVD writer. I've but in an extra... $400 or so. (I have RDRAM so it's crazy expensive). So 5 years for $1600... I don't consider that too bad.

Well that would be tough to say. About the only thing that could be used to judge would be Oblivion. And I'll tell you this... Unless you have something on par with the GeForce 7800 or Radeon equivalent, it would be hard to match the 360/PS3 versions. I know my computer can't do it.

Though, the next one I build will. Wink

the meh comment was about the removal of the Emotion Engine.

I think the original xbox was a pretty big hardware loss it's first few years I can't remmeber the amount lost per though. Also remember Sony's always been in the red as far as hardware profit the first 1~3 years of its consoles life span, look athe PS2 for example.

And with PC's I can bring myself to spend over a grand on one, especailly with the current rate of new PC tech. You buy something and then 2 months later it's obsolete.
