Recently, in Hot Springs AR, some kids were skateboarding on a sidewalk. A cop told them to stop. They didn't. The cop clothes-lined one of the kids, threw him down on the sidewalk, and held him in a choke-hold.

The other kids came back; one of them had a video camera, and started recording. Here is the video:

It's obvious to me (as it should be to anyone, I think) that this was definitely police brutality. For one, you can't arrest people for disobeying a city ordinance (not to mention, yes they were disobeying city ordinance by skating on the sidewalk, but in Hot Springs, there are no skate parks and nowhere for kids to go). For two, HE WAS GRABBING THE KIDS BY THE THROAT and even holding a girl in a choke-hold, just for talking back to him (that is excessive!). But I can see why the kids were freaking out; it's not every day that you see one of your friends being held on the ground by his throat.

Also, if you pay attention to the beginning of the video, the kids didn't even realize that the cop had told them to stop. They had no idea why their friend was on the ground. Also, please note that throughout the video they address the policeman as "sir." They try to talk calmly with him (the only exception being when the guy grabbed the girl by the throat). So I don't think the kids were out of line, and they were not a threat to the cop.

Anyway, the reason why I bring this up now is because it was announced on the news last night that the cop had been acquitted of all charges (and the news report was very biased, saying it was good news and what). Opinions?

It being against a city ordinance might be a cause for arrest, but I'm not 100% sure on that. The kids who decided to flee were not doing themselves any favors, that's for sure, but the conduct of the officer was certainly out of line, considering that the kids had made no hostile moves toward him, not seemed inclined to do anything but ask why they were being treated like this. His decision to treat it more like a riot situation was uncalled for. His acquittal makes me wonder what sort of situation was spun in the courtroom to make it seem like excessive violence was necessary. (And was that video entered as evidence?)

Unless that's just how they do things in Hot Springs. I would hope it isn't.

Break the law...go to jail. That simple. If they were asked nicely to stop and back talked...they deserve a little lesson in the workings of our legal system.

While the Officer went way way too far, at least Police Officers in the US hold some sort of power, over here there a fucking (sorry but they really annoy me over here) laughing stock, as is most of the justice system.

I was assaulted last October, not majorly but I did become afraid of going out for a period of time because of it, they also attempted to push my daughter into the river next to where I was assaulted? Why did they do this? because they have a problem with Chixie's mother who they know we don't even talk to anymore. What happened to them? well two got ordered to pay me £50 ($25) each and got a slap on the wrist, I couldnt describe the fourth guy well enough and there wasn't enough evidence against the third guy.

But yeah, the officer went too far to hold people by their throats...

Graillik, I think you are completely out of line. Yes, they deserved to be taken in for being brats and stuff, but grabbing them by the -throat-? are you kidding me? These guys are trained better than that. He should've known better. He could've just as easily restrained them by grabbing them by the arms.

Small town cops ,since they tend to not have anything better to do, tend to make mountains out of molehills. They will take some minor situation, and blow it way out of proportion.

He could have just put the "fear of g-d into em" without using force and would have gotten much better results.

Well, for starters you spun this and said the kids were saying "Sir" I watched the opening and the kids were condescendingly saying "He was Skateboarding." "You can't do this for skateboarding" To which the cop responded calmly "He was violating city ordinance"

Then the one kid tried to get away..IE flee the scene of a crime in order to evade processing.

Also can we get some background on this? Was there maybe a group of Skaters in the area that were harassing people? Were the Skaters "Grinding" on anything? (Because business owners and city public works have to rebuild walls and sidewalks when they get ground and chipped on due to grinding which costs money) Before the picture were the kids asked to stop skating?

Also that wasn't a choke hold it's a standard holding move. Cops are trained it in basic because you tend to now be able to get up when small amounts or pressure are but on your neck or head. Unfortunately your head isn't easy to grip.

I think they just send you a fine for city ordinance violations, and he was trying to arrest them for "fleeing from the scene" even though, as you saw in the video, the kid he had in handcuffs said "I'm staying right here." It looked like he was running after the other kid because he had a camera.

I don't know if the video was used as evidence, or what. But things are very screwy in Hot Springs; the city is run by organized crime.

This is not the People's Republic of China. You can't be dragged around by the throat just for talking back to someone.

Agreed! There are much better ways he could have handled it. And he blew it way out of proportion.

The kids were saying "sir," about halfway through the video. They were trying to just talk to the cop and instead were being grabbed and thrown on the ground.

It is true that at the beginning, they were saying "he was skateboarding" and things like that, but I don't think the kids had realized that they had done anything wrong, or at least they didn't think it was that severe. And that cop didn't respond calmly! He was yelling at them and threatening them.

It looked to me like they were scared shitless of an out-of-control cop.

I don't know. All of the reports I have read/watched say the kids were just skateboarding on the sidewalk. Anyway, Hot Springs is polluted with organized crime; you would think the police there would be more concerned about that than they would about some kids on skateboards.

But it shouldn't have been used on some fourteen-year-old kids who were not posing a threat. True, it would have been in their best interest to not have done anything to get the cop worked up, but I don't think they realized that. I think the cop was horrendously out of line.

Let me equate this to the soldier in Iraq that shot the kid with the knife a while ago.

He was brought up on charges and the only thing he could say was how a week ago a kid ran at his squad and detonated himself and killed about 4 of his friends.

Now, maybe like I said, skaters were beating people. Starting fights in the street. Tagging the area. Or in general being a complete nuisance...At this point the officer may have been told letting the kids off was a bad thing because then they don't respect the law. At this point it becomes take-down time.

Also, the first kid the fled the scene walked off...He WALKED off he did not run he WALKED off...When the cop told him to stop he began running...That's when the cop chased him.

That kid had a knife. These kids were not armed, nor were they acting threatening in any way.

As for the kid running, I still don't think he understood the severity of the situation and I also think he was probably scared of the cop. I know I would be.
