Yeah... $50 off Premium is pretty good. The other 2... not so good.
I still got my Premium for $300 so I feel pretty good about that.

360 Price Drop Across All SKUs?
Circuit City ad shows Elite, Core 'price breaks.' Microsoft remains quiet.
By Patrick Klepek, 07/31/2007
Retailers have a habit of spoiling the surprise of a price drop. Sony denied anything was happening with PlayStation 3 until the very last minute, then admitted they were simply dodging confirming an announcement they'd planned for their E3 conference.
Yesterday, Microsoft encountered the same issue; Wal-Mart and Toys 'R Us confirmed a long-rumored price cut for Xbox 360, starting with a $50 drop on the Premium SKU, bringing the machine to $350. Unsurprisingly, the company dodged a real answer, neither confirming nor denying the price drop, instead pointing towards their focus on delivering a great lineup of games this Fall.
The nail in the coffin appears to come today, as Joysiq came across a Circuit City ad that again confirms the $50 price break for the Premium SKU -- but, also, a $30 price break for the Elite and $20 for the Core.
# Xbox 360 SKUs with "Price Break" Premium SKU -- $350, previously $400
# Elite SKU -- $450, previously $480
# Core SKU -- $279, previously $300
1UP contacted Microsoft about the Circuit City ad, but they repeated the company line again.
"We have no announcements to make on pricing at this time. While price matters, content is king. And no other system is offering all the games people want to play this holiday at a better price than Xbox 360. With games like Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Madden NFL 08, Guitar Hero III and Rock Band to name a few, we have the greatest holiday line up in video game history."
An official announcement should be coming soon. For now, here's a question: why not drop the Core SKU to $250? Microsoft would have had a console on shelves half the price of a PS3 and the same MSRP as a Wii. Or, is that coming later this year?

"Joystiq reported that Best Buy no longer carries Xbox 360 Core Systems, only the Xbox 360 Premium Pack and Xbox 360 Elite will be available."
It doesn't state if this is akin to the PS3 packages but like I said about Sony when they "dropped the price" of the PS3. here's another case of "we'll give you a choice...ahh, no we won't." The price drops are simply to phase out the last of the inventory so they can sell the higher priced models.
This whole "multiple SKUs" thing was a bad idea from the start. I can see where someday it may become the standard since they're just force feeding it to us down our throats now anyway, but my game system should play my games out of the box. If I wanted to go thru configurations I'd buy a PC game. |

I don't see a problem with phasing out the core. Who the hell buys it anyway. What I do see a problem with is the crappy $30 price drop on the Elite. Why buy an Elite when you can get a PS3 that has built in wireless and Blu-Ray capability for only $50 more. Especially when you can get 5 free Blu-Rays with it.
And as far as Sony's "price drop." There are still more than 2 Million 60G PS3s in the sales channel. I would say that's a legitimate price drop, even if they are clearing out inventory. And even after that, mark my words. 80G PS3 without the EE and no game... $499.

I agree, and so does Sony now. That's why the stated they are phasing out the 60G and the 80G w/ Motorstorm says "Limited Edition" on the box. This should be the evidence to my point that the 80G model will be $499 when the 60s are gone.
MS on the other hand is adding YET ANOTHER SKU, with that stupid ass Halo box. Apparently it's going to have HDMI output and come with the 20G hard drive... Riiiiiiiiiiiight! Still no built in wireless which would cost MS all of like $10 to add. Morons. |

I agree that the staggered reductions are'nt worth it. There should have been an across the board $50 drop or drop to $300/$350/$400, for examples. The "Price Break" makes it look like it's a Circuit City weekly sale, not something by the company that makes the damn product.
The only way I can see a multiple SKU working is if you have one basic config that covers all of the gamer's needs (Elite or 80Gig, for example) and then bring out specific packages with games (like the Gran Turismo PS2 package). That way you don't have levels of consumers where some can't go online or some can't download content or whatever. I respect the "we allow the consumer to buy whatever add-ons they like" but only if you stick to it. M$ should have stayed with that and let Sony do the high end attack, That would have given them both their own identities, for better or worse. M$ is the one who really messed this up.
I remember when the line was that Sega "confused the consumer" by having the Genesis, Sega CD, and 32x software all on shelves at the same time. I think it's really only true in today's case of diff configs bearing the same product name. For the record, the 32X messed things up by being the 32X (underpowered hardware) and the Sega CD messed things up by going the wrong route (FMV instead of massive storage). |

Well it's official.
They also announced the price of the Halo SKU. So now there's 4. The Halo SKU is a tard pack. You get an HDMI port and a play and charge kit for an extra $50.
Core - $280 (retarded $20 price drop)
360 - $350 (Only real value IMO)
Halo - $400 (Yay, HDMI + Play and charge kit = $50)
Elite - $450 (retarded $30 price drop)
Not good. My thought would be it should be:
Core - DELETED! (In StrongBad voice)
360 - $350
Halo - $375
Elite - $400
Seriously... why buy an Elite for $450 when for $50 more you can get a PS3 which has $280 of extra equipment in it (if you wanted to add HD Movie playback and wireless to the 360), AND COMPLETE backwards compatibility. Just my opinion.

Newspaper ads prove accurate as cost of Core, Premium, Elite packages will fall in varying amounts on August 8; Halo-branded system to sell for $399.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot

Word of a price drop for the Xbox 360 has been buzzing since before last month's E3 Media and Business Summit. The rumors got even louder recently as the Hollywood Reporter cited retail sources in detailing a $50 price drop set for August 8. That was soon corroborated by a pair of leaked retailer newspaper ads for Wal-Mart and Toys R Us that was set to run in the following Sunday's paper. Those were closely followed by a Circuit City flier that specified a $50 price drop for the Premium Xbox 360 bundle, a $30 drop for the Elite, and a $20 cut for the Core.
Microsoft on Monday night confirmed all those rumors. Starting August 8, the Xbox 360 Premium bundle (apparently now referred to simply as the Xbox 360 in the company's vernacular) will retail for $349.99. The Xbox 360 Core system will sell for $279.99, and the Elite package will sell for $449.99. The company said the price drop timing is scheduled to coincide with the August 14 release of Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 08.
Finally, Microsoft revealed the pricing of the fourth Xbox 360 bundle--the Halo 3 Special Edition console. Arriving in September with a Spartan green-and-gold color scheme, the system will sell for $399.99. It will include an HDMI-capable system, a wireless controller, a headset, a 20GB hard drive, and a play-and-charge kit. Halo 3 will be sold separately.
As for other nations, there's no word yet on if and when the price drop will arrive. A Microsoft Australia spokesman declined to give a timeframe on when any cut would arrive down under. |
