Sometimes, however, it is true that you can't make a judgment on something if you haven't experienced enough of it. You can't go to one theme park and decide you hate them all-- there are a lot of different kinds of theme parks, and you might like one of them.

If all you ever saw was one silver folding chair and you hated it, you couldn't go around saying you hate all chairs, could you? You could say you hated silver folding chairs, though. Or perhaps just silver chairs, or folding chairs, because maybe there's something about the colour silver in chairs, or the way folding chairs work that you just don't like. But then, a Lay-Z-Boy isn't going to have those qualities most likely (unless you just hate having something to sit on, which makes you -odd-, to say the least)

Now, admittedly, most of the situations you described are not like that, but I don't think it's completely out of line to say someone's wrong because they haven't experienced enough of something to make a valid judgment on them in -all- situations. There are some situations where that statement -is- completely valid.

I think I get what you are saying. I've lurked in many forums where everyone is expected to verify everything they are saying with some sort of source reference just so that the one tiny statement they make can be taken as at least partially valid...until the others start debunking the source.

Needless to say, I do not post in those because I happen to have the opinion that one should be allowed to state their opinon on a matter and leave it at that....no footnotes required.

I typically don't like peas or beans...I should be able to state that without a full explanation as to why and what kind I have or have not tried. If someone wants to ask me why, or continue into a conversation..then sure, I'll give more info...

I'm pretty stoic and and border on apathetic when it comes to other people. But I don't think I've ever told anyone their opinion was wrong because they have never experienced something "enough." Now if you said something like "I hate the Halloween movies." and you have never saw them then yeah...I'll yell at ya.
XD

I'll tell someone their opinion is wrong straight up and defend why it is. But I'll never say something like, "You only think that Judge Dredd sucks cause you haven't seen it 16 times like me."

An opinion cannot be truly wrong based on the definition of what one is. However, the facts that support the opinion could be flawed, lacking, etc, and different facts can form different opinions. I've learned long ago however that trying to change someone's opinions with the presentation of facts is right up there with trying to teach a pig to dance... You fluster yourself and piss off the pig.

I must say, I agree with Blackmage. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. An opinion is never wrong or right, its just what it is "an opinion". Most ppl just get defensive about wut they like, dont take it personal. For example, some ppl like bush as a president; I find he is a retard. Lol it doesnt make me right but at the same time it doesnt mean I am wrong either; therefore; I do not waste my time trying to convince ppl about it. Most ppl want to sit there and argue to make u believe there point, but if we didnt have different opinions then we wouldnt be unique. Now about the beer, hmmm I'm gonna have to say thats sacriledge hahahaha beer is my bestest friend. J/k

And they all stink!

This is very very true.
First I will Preface by saying this is not an attack of any sort, I am just being blunt.

Everyone does have their right to an opinion. But Gaaz, I think what it is... sometimes you have the tendency to force your opinion on people a little too hard, like you are trying to convince people you are right and they are wrong.

For instance. Your hatred for Code*Atom. At first I was trying to expose you to different stuff. But you make up your mind very quickly and then don't change it. And that's part of you. It's not a bad thing... it's part of what defines you. I pretty much just said... Well, Code*Atom is much different than Country which I know Gaaz likes to an extent (and all sounds the same to me... depressing and crappy), and it's certainly not "In the Navy" by Captian Jack, which I also think sucks, so... we have different tastes in a lot of cases. So, I stopped exposing you to them and basically disregard most of your opinions about music b/c our tastes are so different.

Then with the game. You said when you were describing Zelda. You said "it was in fact a bad game." But... it's NOT a bad game. It is just your opinion that it's a bad game. When you and I talked about it, I asked you how long you played it. You told me like 9 hours... and my thought was... well that was long enough. You said you got to the second dungeon and hated it... And I loved the second dungeon. At that point it was clear to me that the game just wasn't for you.

But when it comes to these things that you have negative opinions about, what gets most people is that you insist on letting everyone know your opinion in the most blunt way that makes whatever they are speaking of look like the most craptastic thing ever. You did it with Zelda, the Wii in general and now Maroon 5.
Quote:
Yeah their hit song "makes me wonder" needs an addition...Mainly "Why all our songs sound the same."
When people create topics its about something they enjoy, just b/c you don't enjoy it, doesn't mean you have to put it down in their thread.

I, personally, have gotten used to this part of your personality, but I'm one of the few.

You are not the only one at fault here of course. Like you said in the thread about Maroon 5 or whatever it is. You said you don't like it, and people are forcing their opinions on you. And it doesn't feel good does it. Everyone should just respect everyone else's opinions and move on.

This is what is known as "Factual Opinions". It is the concept that because you believe your opinion, it somehow makes it a fact in your reality. Therefore for someone to argue with that opinion is not to say "I don't agree with your opinion" but to say "you're wrong, you're reality is wrong, you're dumb, you're a liar". Well...on a sub-consious level. I have run into this many times. People will argue their opinions as though you not agreeing with them, is in fact, arguing them to be incorrect. It's sad, but people like that, you can't talk to about certain things. Otherwise, you end up spinning in circles.

Or if you're like me you argue with them for the hell of it, cause it's fun to watch them twist in the wind.

meh, I just get my knickers in a twist when people say that you aren't allowed to think a certain way, lol. Like those who take the view that if you don't vote, you can't complain. I see your point, but if you give me a pineapple and a pinecone and say "you can vote on which one goes up your ass" I'm not going to vote for the lesser of two evils, I'm not ging to vote, but you can bet your ass I'm gonna complain once "the poles close" because either way I'm gonna have rectal bleeding. Hence why I haven't voted during Bushes entire term. OK, this might seem like a threadjacking but rejecting someones opinion based on your own opinion that they didn't give it a chance is ridiculous. It's like someone telling you to bare the pain of the pinecone because your mouth feels so fresh once you cough up the seeds. Razz
