A year of travel

Ten days from now I will be sitting on a plane on my way to New York...
It feels a bit unreal.

After thre days in New York I will be heading to Tennessee and live there for a year. I will work as an Aupair and take care of the children in the family I will be living with.

And now I am really starting to panic...
I was hoping for any kind of advice on what to think about and what to bring.
I know that Zinka have been away like this and I was hoping for your advice.

Just did some reading on an Aupair, sounds like a good opportunity. What part of TN are you staying in?

Tennessee is right above Georgia, and only a couple hours away from Atlanta, GA, otherwise known as "Hotlanta". It's the middle of August and we are having record high temperatures of nearly 100 degrees F.

Tennessee has more mountains and is less industy-heavy compared to Atlanta so the temperature will be slightly cooler...but not by much. We also don't typically have much of anything as far as a Winter...we'll have the rare day when it slips below freezing, but nothing really notable. People here see a single flake of snow and call it a blizzard, causing all bread and batteries to disappear from the grocery store.

People in the South are nice and fairly friendly ppl, depending on how close to the city you are...then its gets less and less friendly. Tennessee doesn't carry that much of a Southern accent as compared to other states. Don't be afraid to just ask someone if you don't understand what they mean. I'm sure you have enough of an accent to where they will understand you're not a local.

I'm sure you're new employer will help you acclimate to your new surroundings and help guide you to where you can get anything you might need as far as affordable clothing or general items. It will all just depend on what works best for you and what you're comfortable wearing...especially taking care of kids.

Places like Target, Wal-Mart, and K-mart are great to get your basic items...I'm most partial to Target for clothes and household items.

You can always ask PO for where to go or what to do about anything else Smile

I am staying in Nashville. (Over here people look like question marks when I say TN but when I say Nashville they light up and starts to talk music.)

I know that TN is close to Georgia. That is the main reason why I picked it. I wanted to go to Georgia but it is a little hard to place people in the exact place that they want to got to. I picked Tn over Pennsylvania.

I have read about the heat that you have right now. That will be a big change since we have experienced to coldest and rainiest summer since 98.
No winter... That will be weird.
But that means I do not have to pack all that many warm clothes.

Do not worry about me making eye contact with people. I will probably walk around staring up at the buildings.
