Times change, rules stagnate, bend, are dropped, added, reorganized, and in the end, it has come to this.
D&D 4th ed is coming out next year and I am RIDICULOUSLY excited to see what the next evolution of dungeons and dragons is going to be like. Reading D&D insider, I see they're already changing how monster :: character ratios are being handled - and who knows where it will go from there (although the 'demo movie' made it pretty clear that grappling is going from gay to good). I mean, look at all the great changes from 2nd to 3rd.
Anyway, release schedual is
May 08 - Player's Handbook
June 08 - Monster Manual
July 08 - Dungeon Master's Guide
I think they're releasing it over a few months so everyone can digest the new information. Anyway, yay for D&D! |

Well, if they can make Grapple so it doesn't become "Irresistible Dance" insane with large/huge creatures that have thumbs, I am all for it. |

Flavorwise, AD&D I think is a lot better than 3rd edition. There is a real sense of having every little battle count, spellcasting is a risky thing, magic weapons are fewer and far between...
However 3rd edition is radically simpler to bring people into. We were trying to teach one of my housemates AD&D and he wasn't a neophyte in RP's (The man comprehended SHADOWRUN for Mod's sake) and AD&D gave him all kinds of fits in determining what's happening.
I guess it is a preference thing. We run our third not as 3rd, but using World of Warcraft instead, so it's alright. |

I also liked how in AD&D getting 20 level 20 meant you were like a God. It just didn't happen. I don't think I ever played an AD&D campaign where I was ever above level 6 or 7. The only concept that had a learning curve to me was thac0, I was like "wtf" when it was being explained the first time.
I've always wanted to learn to and find people to play Shadowrun with also always wanted to play some more Rifts. |

See to me that all comes down to the DMing style, but to be a great Dm you have to have a masterful knowledge of the rules and how to balance or overbalance an encounter. That kind of thing only comes with time and practice, which is why I understand when a lot of people want to stay with older generations of RP systems.
Hell, Ill be running 3.5 for a long time for sure, and it not like it has to be shelfed in May 08. But I'm defintly looking forward to where they're taking the game and created the genre'. |

I want to move from my system so bad. Rolemaster lacks! But the ICE modules are great. |

I've heard that one of the reasons 4.0 is coming out is because they're trying to draw in the recent MMO crowd. Personally, I'm gonna run 3.5 for as long as I can. I have way too many books to give up on it now. |

If you've been paying attention to some recent material, you'll see theres several MMO influences creeping into the game. Most notably the 'Knight" class in PHBII (manages enemy aggro, taunts - basically a tank) and 'Magic Item Sets' that debuted in the Magic Item Compendum, where they openly acknowledged the fact that they were taking the idea from other sources:

The concept of thematically linked sets of magic items that provide more power when used together has a great pedigree in fantasy fiction, but D&D has largly ignored this concept.

It wouldn't surprise me for 4th ed to draw inspiration or mechanic ideas from successful existing sources - as long as the game play is smooth and the systems are graceful. That was was really separated 3.0 from 2nd was how modular all the systems were as compared to the clunky chart fest 2nd mired you in at times.
What I wonder is this "d20 system 2.0" or if they're going a completly different way with it. /ponder |

o.O
I've been out of play for too long. They may be bringing out a fourth in hopes that things like 3 player handbooks can be thinned down to one, and KEEP IT AT ONE.
I personally understand some of 2ed better (in particular thac0) because of the 3/3.5ed. I have on disc somewhere every book that as of June 2006 had come out for 3.5.
I'm a dork and love it. I miss playing AD&D |
