This isn't meant to be sexist, but I do find it odd that I don't find female stand-up comics funny, with the exception of Ellen (who doesn't really do stand-up)in general. It's weird because I do know funny females personally, but for some reason all female stand-up comedians just seem to be obnoxious. Top 3 female stand-up comics I can think of are:
1. Sarah Silverman
-She thinks she's cute and that gives her free range on being as taboo as she wants. She's just comes off as an obnoxious bitch.
2. Margaret Chow
-Is not funny, relies heavily on the fact that she's a woman for "you can relate to her" comedy. In short, she's the female version of 80% of black comedians. I'm not being racist, I just think that comedy based on stereotypes is retarded easy to do and take absolutely no talent, and most of the time it's not funny.
3. Kathy Griffon
-She's Kathy Griffon

I agree, so completely. She annoys me to no end.
Really though, I think it's kind of hard for women to be the kind of funny men are. We don't really like putting ourselves on the line for humor purposes. I mean, with my close friends I'm hilarious, mostly accidentally, but with strangers it's tough. I just don't think it's a woman thing. Those females that do go into stand-up seem to have more masculine qualities (not that that's a bad thing, just what I've observed). |

Madeline Kahn (although she died in 1999), Betty White, and there is another but I cannot think of her name. |

I concur, particularly regarding Sarah Silverman. I think the problem with the majority of female comedians (and any other "stereotype" comic) is that their acts are pretty much all the same.
Yes, I've heard how bad your "time of the month" is and how hard it is for you to find a "nice guy". Etc, etc... |

I knew the woman personally, and while she wasn't a comedian to be exact, she was damned funny

Another funny comedian that's a female, mainly due to her no-holds-bared style is Lisa Lampanelli, since she pretty much comes off like a guy doing standup. But damn...she's mean.
And for sarah silverman - she isn't funny. sorry sarah. |

I like Sarah myself....but in small doses. When shes just talking in interviews ( usually with Stern on Sirius) I find her hysterical...and her show does make me laugh a lot too....but her stand up is either hit or miss.
Lisa Lampanelli, the Queen of Mean....LOVE HER. She keeps me amused to no end.
Wanda Sykes is also very, very funny...check her out sometime!
There are some decent ones they play on Raw Dog on Sirius but yes, the majority of them arent very funny. |

Same can be said for a man's stand up. I mean how much do we need to hear about how much women like to shop!?
I LOVE Judy Tenuta. (she even addresses a topic we're discussing in Sexuality in Videogames - hahahaha!)
I also like Maryellen Hooper. I caught her while up in Cleveland at Hilarities with my sister. Yes she may talk about being married / relationships (msot male comics do too!) she makes some pretty goofy ass faces that make me laugh super hard. the only thing I could find on you tube wasn't too great (promo for four comedians).
Phyllis Diller can still hold up with the rest of them!
But the truth of the whole situation is that the target audience now prefers the rude and crude opposed to the daily. So where as most folks would hate Sarah Silverman, she's playing the same cards as most male comics who have made it.  |

I'm glad Tobs brought up Lisa Lampinelli. Now THERE'S a female comedian. The only problem with Lisa is that she may be too much for some to handle. But if you're a fan of Dave Attell, then Lisa is right up your alley. |
