The newest target... MASS EFFECT.
Why?
B/c there's a sex scene in it.

One that they say has full frontal nudity and the player can "choose what he does."

I swear... these people are retards. At least the very last guy that talks has some sense... says that it's up to the parents and the government shouldn't be getting involved.

Watch the video and be amazed at the stupidity.
Fox News sucks ass at stuff like this!

EA Asks Fox News for 'Mass Effect' Clarifications
We promise we won't make a 'Fair and Balanced' joke
By Kris Pigna, 01/24/2008
When a little-known conservative news service called Cybercast posted an error-filled story earlier this month about the depiction of "graphic sex" in Mass Effect, no one cared -- anyone who played Mass Effect knew the charges of it showing full-frontal nudity and that it was marketed to children were blatantly untrue. When a little-read Townhall.com columnist picked up the story and made the same erroneous charges, a few stalwart gamers attempted to set him straight as best they could, and the world moved on.

But a non-issue that should have stayed in a few little-read columns escalated when Fox News picked the story up and ran with it, with the following error-filled segment of their own:

Game Head's Geoff Keighley valiantly attempted to set the record straight, but the overall tone of the piece remained one of erroneously depicting Mass Effect as a game for perverts, marketed for children. Now, as Kotaku reports, Electronic Arts (who recently acquired Mass Effect developer BioWare) is drawing the line.

In a sternly worded letter to Teri VanHorn, producer of Live Desk with Martha MacCallum (which ran the segment on Fox News), Jeff Brown, EA's vice president of communications, writes, "As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect."

Brown goes on to identify specific untrue statements made by Fox News, including:

That the game portrays full-frontal nudity:

"Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots - a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether."

That it portrays graphic sex:

"Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time."

And that the game is marketed to children:

"Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission."

Brown finishes the letter with harsh criticism, although he explicitly states EA is not threatening legal action:

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

Sincerely,

Jeff Brown Vice President of Communications Electronic Arts, Inc.

It'll be interesting to see if Fox News meets EA's request, but the fact that publishers are finally holding news agencies that report factually misleading stories about sex and violence in video games publicly accountable can only be a good thing. Whether those news agencies similarly desire to hold themselves accountable for their mistakes remains to be seen.

The question is why would anyone with an opinion wish to force any of their views down other folks' throats?

The world may never know.

When people get too lazy to research for themselves, that's when stupid articles and interviews like this happen.

That's what really gets me about this Doot.
This is no better than whenever Fox airs Jack Thompson and his ignorant fat head.

If you have an opinion and want to display it, fine... but back up your thoughts with FACTS not BS assumptions that are false!

Yeah, remember that they are the station that single-handedly made both "bitch" and "ass" cool to say in primetime. And aren't they still owned by Rupert "tabloid king" Murdoch? Journalistic integrity is not high on their priority list when deciding the programming schedule or content.

Plus, the thing we don't seem to understand is that all you have to do is throw the story out there. You can retract it all you want but 99% of the people that run with it (the viewers) don't care to look beyond "They said it on the NOOZ, maw!"

Actually Rupert Murdoch doesn't deal with Fox News anymore.

It's actually his Liberal cohort Peter Chernin...And when Rupert Retires his Also liberal son James Murdoch will take over the network.

Bet you guys didn't know the most "Conservative" news channel was run by a buncha libs did ya? Amazing how people confuse "Pundits" with actual reporters. I bet John Stewart and Steven Colbert tell the story straight as they are reporters not pundits...Oh wait, they are pundits...My mistake.

When I first saw this, I thought you meant Star Fox...

But anyway, I love how they pretty much shooed of Geoff. It was fucking ridiculous. And Low and behold, when asked if anyone actually played the game, everyone said no. Quit jumping on the band wagon. Studies can also show that games don't enact people to go on shooting sprees or have sex with aliens. Hell, there are studies that show that gamers are better problem solvers and have better eye hand coordination too, but we never get to hear about those. I hate that sort of stupid shoving the blame that everyone does.

This here is why every time I sell a M rated game I a. Ask for ID and b. make the buyer aware why the game is rated M. It still suprises me how many times I get "Oh he'll play it at a friend's house anyway." and "It's not like they haven't seen that before." Put your foot down as a parent and tell the kid "no". I can't remember how many times I was told no, and did it hurt me? Parents these days I think are too worried about being cool or being liked by their children that they forget to parent. You can be a parent and still be your child's friend. You have to make sure you know where to draw the line.

Precisely. Everybody should know by now that they are not reliable as a news source. Hell, they get their stories off the internet.

They'er taking the blog post that Gunslinger (?) linked to in my Sexuality in Videogames thread and are attempting to claim it as their own work, pretty much.

EA have spoken out about this, as the property now belongs to them, which I'm very glad about, its about time one of the big names in the industry stood up to the retards in the tabloid media who don't research properly, how many times will we see videogames attacked in the mass media? I doubt it'll stop anytime soon, not until the current (and possibly next) generation of senior editors and higher up members of the board pass on and are replaced by a generation of people in positions of power that have some knowledge on the industry itself.

I tackled the moron who wrote the original blog piece

The original article

My reaction

It does make me chuckle that people can make these assumptions when they haven't even played the game.

But alas, gamers are this decades big whipping boy it seems, bad times.
