If you polled the right places (with an appropriately multilingual survey for those who can't read English), I'm sure there would be a good number who think Jimmy Carter or Ronald Reagan was a myth. Just because they had a sample of 3000 people doesn't mean the sample was balanced. |

i also saw an article where they are sending kids to Aushwitz to give them perspective that the Hollocaust did occur with first person accounts of people who were there. that article at least returned some hope for humanity (not much though)
It is events and the general stupidity of the general populace that really make me want to bunker up and not deal with them. That would be stupid though...election year and all the stupid rises to the top as the ole centerfuge spins the words of the jackoffs that want to be leader. |

I sometimes wonder why I invoke "dummy mode" on people so often... now I know. |

I give you all the first conversation that I ever had with Tatjana, my girlfriend:
Mike (Tobs for those who don't know): "So...I noticed you have an accent, where are you from?"
Jenna (Her nick name): "Oh, I'm Austrian."
Mike: "Austrian? That's pretty cool."
Jenna: "Yea, Austrian, and no, we don't have Kangaroos in Austria"
Mike: "Yea, i know. World War One technically was triggered in Austria."
Jenna: "Wow...I think you're the first American that I've met that actually knew that."
Mike: "I feel ashamed."
And there you have it.
SIDENOTE: Another night down the road, Jenna met my cousin, Chris
CHris: "So you're Jenna. Nice to meet you"
Jenna: "And the same to you."
Chris: "So where are you from again? Mike told me but I can't remember."
Jenna: "Oh, that's fine...I'm from Austria."
Chris: "Oh really? So what are the Kangaroos like?"
!!!!!!!!!SMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chris: "DAMMIT MIKE!!! WHY DID YOU HIT ME?!?!" |

The problem is that because of all the Equal rights business, we learn less about our history in schools now and more about other places where some of the students may be from nd its getting worse every year. |

I agree, Riva. As much as I want to say I received ample US History I feel a lot was censored. Here in the States I know I suffered a lot of omissions of complete US History due to my generation finally being able to embrace black history as part of the collective US History. We've had to deal with it being segregated even in the books for the longest time. I am not sure what the most recent textbooks teach but I hope they have amended that because I always felt disjointed when the focus was only given one month of the year while I was growing up.
We had a lot of white history centric teachings (simply because we were using older textbooks) and it made me feel like we forget that we all started as immigrants in the States. Sometimes the classes gloss over that fact.
A lot of times, too, the writers of textbooks tend to lean a certain way and some of them puff up and exaggerate certain stories that could lend on to believe that certain people they read about were overly glorified and could possibly be "fictional".
I can tell you the crap we learned about George Washington chopping down a cherry tree, not being able to tell a lie and having wooden teeth. Sounda almost like a bedtime story.
Thing is, these are all stories passed down - researched heavily or not. Much like any book written as fact there will always be a "sway" on them to make certain figures/events seem waxed and fictional.
Luckily we all hit a stage where we take it upon ourselves to learn more. Some stay abreast of current events. Others tend to take a different path and focus on other aspects. They may be more educated in different avenues of culture.
It does sadden me to see that even someone so recently promenant as Winston Churchill could be considered fictional (especially with such photo documentation of the man) but I assume that the folks polled were not given a photo and merely asked outright who they believed to be true or false.
I mean, look at Jay Leno's bits on the Tonight Show where he interviews people on the street about events and people. They could have polled about 500 people on the street and even if 450 answered their questions accurately they'll show you the 50 who didn't. |
