events like this are a major contributors to my cynicism and general antipathy to humanity. there was nothing that could have stopped this other than proper vigilance, which NEVER follows events like this. people rise in awareness of the surrounding factors and their surroundings then don't pay attn again after a little time. also not how things like this usually happen in gun-free or restricted areas for ccw carriers. this just shows that unless personal awareness goes into your survival, nothing is going to prevent the dedicated from doing actions like this, ie Nick Harris and Kyle Klebold of Columbine, the 19 hijackers, and the last shooters.
also these sprees are seeking attn more than anything else and just like columbine the shooter here came off his meds (looking voluntary) and was a good student. these are contributing factors but not causation. a personal decision was the reason and we should handle that, not ammend the law to prevent anyone with mental illness from possessing weapons. (are you listening VA?) |

in a gun-free area, dudes would use their car as a weapon and kill many;
in a gun-filled area, dudes would car bomb themselves and kill many.
Think about it, more people owns cars then people owns guns. Can you imagine if CNN would grab a hold of that line? haha they'd make people freak out for nothing and they could probably also add ''Did you know? 1/3rd of the population may suffer from road rage. that's 1/3rd of the population... ARMED WITH A DEADLY LOADED WEAPON WHEREVER THEY DRIVE.''
anyway..
It's neither having or not having the right to bear arms that will solve the problem. That just allows, like Scrumy said, to ''maintain'' the status of disorder regardless, but as much as it maintains it, it also tries to contain it. Considering we're trying to fix a situation without digging deeper to the root of the problem, since obviously we see it as being such a complex thing to do so, perhaps as we attempt to know more, we have this ''temporary'' set of solutions (ex: having or, depending on the country, forbidding the right to bear arms).
It's like playing Tetris and trying desperately to get that one tetris when your screen is half full already but blow it up and then, as you look back at it, you're all like ''damn, I shoulda clean the lower sections first that were all messed up, I'll do that next time''. That is semi-awareness if you ask me; complete awareness of the problem would be to take a look from the start; from the first drop of a piece, and then realize ''o wait, look how scattered I am until half the screen is full then I panic and want to rush it. AAAH maybe I should like, NOT FUCK UP EARLY ON so perhaps I wouldn't ... wait I might not even end up needing a solution for the problem I have right now cause IT WOULDN'T BLOOM IN THE END TO THIS SITUATION I'M IN (sorry, caps).''
Eventually, there might be no need to have weapons to defend ourselves from each others, we'll just have tools of survival ''in case'' we'd need them. Or perhaps just for entertainment. I shot guns when I was a kid, good times. Except for the sound, wasn't a fan of how loud they were, but liked the mechanism and all, I also really liked the weight for some reason. I think it was because I didn't expect that from the proportion of the item itself. Never saw them as more then tools, eh rather heavy and expensive limited tools mind you but tools nevertheless.
Ops, I'm drifting into crazy Utopian talk.. |

well to quote Michael Chertov: We have to be right every time and the terrorists have to be right only once.
this accents the difficulty in stopping events even if you are being vigilant so a little Utopian thought is not bad as Utopia does mean nowhere. also i do mean terrorist in the text book def in quoting this as we really dont need to open that can here for the main usage. |
