And you are bringing to the table what most others are bringing: years of experience as a gamer. That's commendable. However, not everyone who is an audience of Fox is a gamer, therefore, care not as passionately or at all about video games as those who are. All news forms are like this and this should never be a surprise, yet, here we are outraged like it is. How often is it we truly sit down to get both sides of the story before egos and personal interest is involved and challenged? Not likely many times. I know I've fallen into that mindset from time to time - I'm not proud of it but it's a human thing.

Here is a good quote from another board about the subject...
Quote:
You can't train for a real life shootout on counterstrike, thats like training to hit a baseball on wii sports.

The military uses flight simulators to teach pilots how to fly. My pilot father has done voice overs for some and my navigator step dad has used some.
The army sent out a free FPS video game as a recruiting tool for high scores.
Wii sports helps with hand-eye coordination and depth perception so I wouldn't put it past it being a useful tool in an advancement in personal aptitude in sports - hell, gaming could take the good press of that.

In a solitary instance, I've even (light-heartedly) attributed my accute gun range skills (dead on shots first time) to my dealings with games such as Point Blank, House of the Dead and Time Crisis. Granted, I'm not of the mindset that I'd turn those talents to offing someone.

Bravo! And I truly mean it.

I just hope those listening to Jack Thompson who have zero interest in gaming and are advocates of such things would be tuning into a podcast about something they have no interest in to truly make an impact.

You're right, and that's why I said "hope it gets noticed." Even though, chances are, it won't.

That's the point. As Riva said, the one time Fox did sit both down, they barely let the person that was there on behalf of gaming get a word in edge wise. Then, afterward, the chick (who's name I forgot) that was trying to say that the "explicit sex scene" in Mass Effect was an outrage, came back and apologized... Why? Because she was uninformed and when she actually saw the scene, it was laughable.

She didn't do her research.

Like Jack usually doesn't. When something like this comes up, he comes out and immediately starts blaming videogames without even knowing if the person that did it actually played them or not. As I said earlier (I think), he said that the NFL wouldn't put their name on "Blitz the League" b/c of it's content, when in reality, Midway couldn't b/c EA owned the license.

Big difference. Simulators are built with every detail in mind. Not to mention you're actually using controls that simulate the actual controls of the plane. Counterstrike doesn't actually simulate what it takes to aim, fire, and reload a gun.

I would say that Wii Sports would help your swing more than counter strike would help you kill. A lot more. That much is true. And you're right, it does help with hand eye coordination. But if you can hit a ball 500 ft in Wii Sports baseball, does that mean you are capable of picking up a 34oz bat and hitting a baseball 500ft for real. DEFINITELY NOT!

So why would Counterstrike and other games like it be any different when they have EVEN LESS to do with the real act.

As have I... on more than one occasion. And to be honest... I would probably have much less of an issue with it if he targeted something that actually used a gun. At least that is actually making you aim and fire. I guess there's nothing out there that is actually realistic enough to a "murder" simulator to him.

Of course they won't. Which, again, is why I said "hope it gets noticed." I was referring to being noticed by someone that has pull in a more reputable news channel.

But did FOX put her apology onto their news report? The majority of people wouldn't of bothered researching Mass Effect or what happened on that show beyond watching the initial broadcast.

And that only matters to us gamers, your general public doesn't give two shits wether the person dictating them has actually done thier research, why? Because people are lazy and aren't willing to do their own research, even when its so easily accessible as it is in this day and age, they'd rather believe what their initially told.

As said, people would have to do research for them to know that, thats just not gonna happen so they'll happily believe exactly what their told regardless of how reliable the source is to those who are actually in the know.

The point is, Gamers, who are, and lets be frank here, hardly a respected community and mostly comprised of those stereotyped as "geeks", are the only ones who give a shite about what FOX, Jack Thompson, The Sun, the Daily Mail, and the Pakeerah family (the family who blamed their sons murder on manhunt even though the Police say theres no link) say about our hobby and interests. We're not in an age where theres a dedicated gamer in a position of respect outside of the specialised media and no one is really going to listen to us until theres a gamer who is, say for example, an anchorman for a popular news broadcast.

Riva... you're absolutely right, and I have a feeling until that happens (gamer in respected position like you stated), we're going to see this crap all the time.

Thing is, it's not going to happen because gaming is a leisure activity.

As is movie watching, as is listening to music.

Some things won't be weighed in the same gravity of REAL issues out there, gaming is one of them. Which doesn't help either side of the argument; yours or Jack Thompson's.
