Quote: | Are men smarter than women? No. But they sure think they are. |
Joan Raymond from Newsweek (just an article)
Quote: | I analyzed 30 international studies, and what I found was that women, across the world, tend to underplay their intelligence, while men overstate it.
...These studies show that on average, women underestimate their IQ scores by about five points while men overestimate their own IQs. Since these studies were international in scope, the results were essentially the same whether women were from Argentina, America, Britain, Japan or Zimbabwe.
...Surprisingly, [both] men and women perceive men being smarter across generations. Both sexes believe that their fathers are smarter than their mothers and grandfathers are more intelligent than their grandmothers.
...If there are children, [both] men and women think their sons are brighter than their daughters.
...What was interesting was that some groups of people, both men and women, got it so wrong. Men with average to below-average intelligence think that they are quite clever. And very smart women think their intelligence is low.
...Men aren't more clever or smarter. But since they think they are, they are more confident about their abilities. |
I'm not surprised in the least bit. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule; I know several men that underestimate their intelligence immensely, but even more who overstate it. I also know some overly confident women (I may be one of them!), but I know even more who are entirely too demure about their abilities.
I more just thought this article was interesting. This doesn't really prove anything; I don't think it's supposed to, but the results are the ones talking. Does anyone disagree? |

IQ tests tend to be notorious for their bias towards a select set of mental aptitudes. Mainly, the recognition of patterns, numbers with geometry and classical logic tossed in.
I've noticed that guys have a tendency to focus on one task or keep in one mindset better than females, but lack multi-tasking abilities. While females tend towards the opposite. They seem to be better suited to managing multiple tasks at once, but have trouble devoting all of their focus on a single task.
Then again, I think that is a result of upbringing more than anything. Males and females seem to learn different skill sets and mentalities early in life, and that affects their mindsets later on.
I tend to be an exception to that trend, and I can manage many tasks at once, and I am more comfortable switching from one job to another which keeps my mind fresh and alert. I tend to get lethargic if I have to focus entirely on one thing at once for a long period of time.
I've been known to maintain IM conversations while cooking and cleaning in the kitchen at the same time while troubleshooting an IT problem over the speakerphone. Then again, I'm a very strange person that has a very eclectic array of skills. |

Quote: | Universally, men tend to score higher on certain specialized skills, such as spatial awareness. In the real world, that means they might be better at reading maps or navigating. Women score higher in terms of language development and emotional intelligence. But most experts agree there is no real, important overall difference when it comes to gender and intelligence. |
This has to do with men (and women) thinking that men are smarter, not with the fact that they aren't or that IQ tests are swayed. |

Sorry, I forgot the beginning paragraph in my response (It was late forgive me). =D
It is because of the general methods and the mindset of how men solve problems vs women that creates the perception that men are slightly smarter than women. Also, the narrow focus mindset tends to give someone the illusion that they are smarter because they progress very far in a specific avenue or field, but is otherwise weak in other endeavors. The reality is, both methods of thought have equal merit, and does not affect overall intellegence. |

What it sounds like this article picks up on is the cultural tendency to weight men more than women, so while there's no significant different, men are thought to be smarter because they're blessed with the freedom to act without (significant) fear that failing will follow them around for the rest of their lives. Having taken more risks, more of them have been successful, so men appear to be smarter because they innovate more. Plus, that whole monotheistic paternalistic religion thing isn't helping. |

I refuse to believe that the vagina or the penis affect the intelligence of people. The important part is we're all smart enough to reason, which puts us above all other animals. Well, that and opposable thumbs.

On the subject... A comedian once said:
"Girls keep saying us guys think with our penis. I gave it a shot. Had a memory leak.
...And what about girls, huh?!
...Hey, so that is the G-Spot. No wonder nobody can find it!" |

I believe the article proved that.
I think this guy's very correct in his discoveries: Women are too often pushed into a state of "My boyfriend is smarter." And too many guys put their girlfriends in that position.
But the scary part about everything is that it's been happening for as long as we can remember. you know what I think? (and please strike me down with vigor if i go too far): It's because Men are bigger. Because most men can exercise a larger physical exertion than woman, we prove ourselves to be better, in a survivalist and combat aspect. The fact that a man can carry more on his back or lift something heavier has led man to believe they are greater than woman for as long as thousands of years.
I think it's only now that we find that really, it's a much more balanced playing field.
Well, I always loved the saying: Behind every powerful king is the more powerful wife. |

Funny thing Tobs, most anthropological study has shown that tool making and tool innovation seems to originate from the female sex of primate species, who then pass the tools out to the men. Or teach it to them if they are being nice.
Seriously, we're humans, some are smarter than others, some are not. What sex you are might have an effect on that, but I'm a skeptic. Culture seemed to be the biggest determining factor in the study, and we make culture and determine what genders exist in culture. |

Well when you disect the human brain meales have more grey matter meaning they have the capacity to have a higher intellect when it comes to math and reasoning.
Women have a higher amount of white matter which gives them a higher capacity for artistic endeavors and probably thinking up different ways to do things.
Hence, women can invent the tools but men tend to use them more effectively. |
