Coming this June to coincide with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, The new 80 Gig PS3 bundle is going to come packed with the game as well as the new Dual Shock 3.
Hopefully this will give PS3 sales the kick in the ass they need in the US. I know I'm tempted to get one. |

Talking about MGS4...
G.I. SnakeEyes wrote: | ........EVEN BLEAKER, AND LESS OF A POSSIBILTY MORE NOW THAN EVER.
Quote: | Most people assumed that Sony's decision to use Blu-ray as its format on the PlayStation 3 was unnecessary figuring that few, if any, games would take advantage of the 25-50GB a disc could offer. Less than 3 months from its release, Hideo Kojima has now revealed that Blu-ray's capacity has limited what Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots could have been.
In an interview with Famitsu, Kojima revealed that Guns of the Patriots did indeed suffer cuts in order to fit the game onto a Blu-ray disc. The disc used for MGS4 is of the 50GB kind, which is roughly six times the capacity of a regular DVD, and the game has been skimped down as to only include local audio tracks and forced Metal Gear Online to be shipped on a seperate disc because of the lack of space. Kojima's actual quote (translated from Famitsu) was: "There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress."
The Metal Gear franchise has always been known for being dialogue-heavy, but MGS4 is set to outdo its predecessors. With the stunning visuals and the possibility of an extensive amount of dialogue outstripping even a Blu-ray disc, this should leave fans excited for the final product. This bit of news should also be enough of a deterrent for Xbox 360 hopefuls that keep hoping that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be defecting to the Xbox 360 because it would be hard to imagine the game being 6 discs long. |

This is pure BS. It's like when The DoA team said that Dead Or Alive was done on the XBox because the PS2 couldn't handle it...then months later, there it was. This is just hype so that prospective buyers can say "wow, this game is gonna be great...look how big it is!".
In computing, size doesn't matter...if you can program well. |

I bet they just tried to use a lot of uncompressed video and audio of the standard theatrical 1080p and dts kind. |

That's exactly what it was.
They wanted to store everything uncompressed. But they couldn't.
So they are compressing some stuff to make it fit on the disc. |

But Shino, you're saying then...that they made a game that can't be naturally fit onto a 50 gig disc. I'm sorry but unless they're extolling the entire MGS history in a full 23-part symphony rendition, this is just sloppy (meaning weak sauce) programming. I can understand you don't want to compress anything but that's like saying we don't want to ever use contractions.
And you can see that we do all the time.
It's like a painter using only the primary colors and no varying shades. Yes, it's still painting and it's still art but it's not gonna produce the same quality. The level of programming that is SUPPOSED to exist on the MGS team should be thinking compression and other space saving procedures (even something as simple as subroutines and GOTO's for God's sake) first off to get more stuff into less space. Even when I wasn't concerned about space I used to go that route, if for no other reason than to eliminate repeat operations.
50+ gigs...Not only is the game NOT that big, it's NOT that good. |
