Mara and the Adults



My moment of rest in the countryside was interrupted by a teenage girl I hadn't noticed yet. She had somehow managed to walk all the way over and sit against the wall of the barn, where I was. Maybe I hadn't been looking up, or maybe she had come from the side or one corner. But that didn't matter. What I mostly saw was that she was someone I didn't know, despite my good knowledge of the townfolk. Plus, she wore city clothes; a tanktop and a skirt.

Her eyes seemed wet, and there was a tiny but noticeable trail of mascara going down below her right eye. She was hugging her knees, her chin on top of them, her eyes turned to the upcoming sunset.

"Hi there." I said. No answer.

"Hi!" I said again, with a bit more volume. Her only response was to turn away slightly and keep staring at the horizon.

"Don't disturb me." She muttered back. "Besides, I'm not supposed to talk to strangers."

From a six year old girl, I would've understood, but she looked at least sixteen... I took off my sunglasses and thought...

"That's odd." I said. "I'd say you look mature enough to take care of yourself."

"People are never mature enough. We all know that."

I didn't. But then, I was a country boy.

"Where do you come from? Some suburb?" My head was already thinking Kansas City...

"I come from Hell." Came the answer. That had to be the city, but she didn't let me ask confirmation, and simply went on:

"Because in there, maturity is impossible,
Television is evil,
Computer games are against schoolwork,
Jokes are forbidden,
A+ isn't enough,
Money is power,
Time is money,
Forgetting to brush your teeth is a sign of disrespect,
It's required that you read school books from waking up to falling asleep,
You're not allowed to fight no matter what,
You're not allowed to express your opinion,
You're not allowed to argue something even if you're right,
You're not allowed to have friends who look ugly or poor,
If you get a cold, it's your own fault,
If you dress the wrong way, everyone yells at you,
If you do something the wrong way, everyone yells at you,
If you don't look normal, everyone hates you,
If you use the internet, you are a freak,
If you listen to non-pop music, you are from outer space,
If you like the Backstreet Boys, you are gay,
If you take computer studies, you are a nerd,
If you are part of the school sports team, you are stupid,
If you get good grades, everyone beats you up,
If you swear, you're told not to, even if everyone else does,
You're told to do so something and then everyone does the opposite,
If you press the horn, you're considered rude,
If you press the gas pedal, you're a racer,
If you listen to music too loud, you're an immature kid,
If you listen to a CD, you are told it's not even music,
You must be happy and smile at all times,
You must never blame other people no matter what,
Once you're done with your work, do more,
Once you're done with your extra work, do more,
A doctorate isn't enough,
If you want to be a writer, you're crazy,
If you want to be a doctor, you're stupid,
If you want to be a technician, you're a lowlife,
If you gamble, you're a fool who doesn't know the value of money,
If you play hockey, you're a rough and rude person,
If you do snowboard, you're a punk,
If you play golf, you're a sissy,
If you play soccer, you're homosexual,
If you breathe, you are evil."

I took a deep breath. Okay. I think my argument will be strong enough.

"Why don't you move away?" I said.

"My demand for a passport was refused."

"Then how come you're here?"

"I'm dreaming."

And then pop, she vanished.

Freaky ... why did I think of the lil girl Samara in the Ring as I was reading this?

I think that BUS-1 and I think alike because I too thought of Samara from the ring.
But anyway I really like this piece. Then again I enjoy almost anything that is: dark / depressing / creepy
