I know this is all already resolved but I've got two cents burning a hole in my pocket, so here goes:
Amber is your wife and as such should take precedence to even, *gulp* a best friend. As such I would have said to you to have taken a video camera and documented the whole trip for said friend (Faye). It still gives him the feeling of being along for the trip (and that you care!) but it still provides the necessary space for all to allow for the family/friend dynamics to still work to the best of their potential. It also would provide an awesome keepsake for years later for, at least him, and all of you if you duplicate it. But be careful as to how much family stuff you get on camera as it could turn into a video documented 'virtual third-wheel experience' if you're not careful.
