I am feeling a bit glum today. The Anniversary of my father's death is today. He was only 52 and had a stroke. Then within 12 hours of the stroke he fell into a coma. We then got a call from the doctor (my father was living in Florida at the time, new job, recently engaged, starting a new life) and we were told we had to make a decision. Operate, which would only prolong his life for maybe three months with paralysis of half his body and living in a hospital bed or pull the plug on his life support and let nature take it's course.
It was the hardest decision that we, as a family, (his ex-wife [my mother], my two brothers, and me) ever had to make. We chose to pull the plug. We got a call no more than three hours later saying that he was gone.
It will be five years ago today that he passed away and it still stings. I just hope I can make it through work today.
I don't want to bring anyone down today at all, but for me this is cathartic. Writing has always been a passion and a release. My dad would want me to be strong today and not let anyone see my weakness. But that's where he and I differ. I feel that showing weakness is a sign of strength. It may not make sense to you, but it does to me.
I just want to let the whole PO world know that despite my father's many flaws I loved him and still love him to this day.
This post is in honor of Peter Carl Bellehumeur.
