FFVI was one of the better ones, I must admitt. I really liked that game a WHOLE LOT. There were a few things that bugged me about it, though.
1. The party: It was AWSOME having all those characters! Each one with their own personality and character traits. However, the way the game was set up it seemed like there were just TOO MANY of them. You just couldn't get a good feel for all the characters in the game cause you could only have so many in your party and you just couldn't meet them all as thouroughly as you wanted. Plus the lack of a clear main character made the game very amorphous. It was hard to tell how you should look at things because of that lack of a main character mindset.
2. Side quests: The end of the game is just so... amorphous (yeah, the same term I used before, I know). I mean, here you are after the world goes kablooie and there's no real clear intent as to WHAT you're supposed to do. I mean, yes, you need to get more characters, but, again, with the character system of this game it's hard sometimes to feel motivated to find them all. I mean, they are all great characters but most of who and what they are is revealed in the side quests. Before that it's a lot harder to form attachments to them, and thus when you need to go find them again it makes it seem like all you're doing is going through the motions of "Everyone's lost, let's go find them" instead of actually WANTING to find them. After that and you get into the character revealing side quests things go on great as usual, but before... well, you get the idea.
Those were my two major quirks about that game. Other than that I LOVED IT TO DEATH. So don't think I'm just bashing it. I really did like it. It's just that those two things REALLY stuck out to me, and since we were talking about it I thought I'd share.
Oh, and um... FFX RULES!

(yes i know i still dont have it....) any info on breeding chocobos? |

Knights of the Round is not neccessary for beating the game, and personally I never had the patience to sit and breed chocobos for the 1000 years it takes to get a gold one. But that's me. Anyway, my point is that you can beat any boss in FFVII (except perhaps the Weapons) without KOTR. Just try to see what the boss' attacks are and anticipate them. As always, have at least two of your three characters stocked with badass healing magics, as those will save you many many times.
And for anyone who cares, my feelings on FFVI can be found here.

Well I guess I'd have ta disagree with ya then. Perhaps my overactive imagination made up parts that didn't exist, but really enjoyed that game. It had such an abstract feel to it, and a sort of ambiance that I have yet to see reproduced. A sense of theme, of a collective effort as opposed to an all-powerful hero. There was no stereotypical badass with a big sword. You had characters you felt for, and I did, whose themes you recognized when they were brought up. On the contrary, I really wanted to save every main character and put them back in my party because I wanted to know what would happen to them. Each character has their own respective goals and aspirations, and I feel the ending was moving because not only did Kefka get wiped out (in a glorious series of battles with my fave boss music), but in the ending it focuses on each of the characters and how they work together with their own little quirks to get back to the airship and back to the world they saved.
I enjoyed the heck outta the game. I agree that it's not the best RPG ever made. I've got my own opinions on that sort of thing. And all the people proclaiming FF6 as the best game ever made doesn't take away from the fact that I thought it was a great game with an equally great score (music). I respect your views though, just pointing out my own <^^> |

FFVI certainly had a lot going for it, and the feeling of having this huge group of heros go take on the ultimate evil makes more sense, but my problem was that the story never justifed just why you needed every single one of them.
To use FFIV as an example, when you fight Zemus/Zeromus at the end, every character there has a very personal reason for being there. True it would have been cool to use Cid, or Tella, or any of FFIV's incredibly cool cast to fight him, but the five that end up fighting him are the ones that had the most involved personally in kicking his ass!! Perhaps it's been too long since I played FFVI, but I can't remember that being in the game for the life of me! |

First, Cobi, you do have a good point. There is certainly that side to it, wanting to KNOW what happened to them all. That was a great motivator for finding them all. The ending of that game was also very awsome, the music complimenting it beautifully. It was very cool.
Second, I'd have to agree with you, Rev. In IV each character had a very good reason to be there, and wanting to destroy this evil. I've said this before, but I have a special place in my heart for IV as the first FF I ever played, but it's also just a really good game.
Third, on the subject of FFVII and chocobos. Cobi, you know what I'm gonna talk about, man! You remember! Me and Cobi play through a lot of RGPs together (it's a tradition... DO NOT QUESTION THE TRADITION!) and FFVII is probably one of the first. And one time the two of us stayed up all night after being up for a long time before that and we took one whole night, a WHOLE NIGHT, and we got the golden chocobo. By the time we finally got her we were sooo out of it, but not so much that we did't go get Knights of the Round! Man, that was some night.... it's a lot of work getting a gold chocobo, but, man, just being able to pull off KotR made it all worth while!

One night through to get the gold Chocobo? I can't tell if that is sheer determination or sheer insanity! |

Try sheer boredom.
Naw... I just really love side quests. In my opinion you've never really beaten a game until you've got ALL the secrets and side quests. THEN you can say you beat the game. ... So I'm a masichist? SO WHAT!
