Lemme ask something here, the ultimate question

Is it better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all, and can anyone truely know happiness without truely knowing sadness?

Think about it

"Is it better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?"
Yes (for the most part)...but if you've just lost someone or something you cared deeply about, it'd probably be hard to believe that quotation.

I lost my grandmother 10 years ago, and that was difficult. She was such a loving, caring person, and even though I knew she was sick, I didn't think she'd go that quickly. What made it worse was that we got into an argument shortly before she went to the hospital, and I was upset that I never got to see her and tell her I was sorry. From what I've been told, though, she had no hard feelings towards me. I miss her, but I also know that she taught valuable lessons and we had many good memories together.

And sometimes, friendships end. You stop communicating, or you get into a fight, or you move away. Sometimes you just don't have anything in common anymore. Even though there are several people who have faded out of my life, I've learned a lot from them and they've helped me become the person I am now.

I also think it's possible to love someone even if you've never met him/her. I lost my twin sister at birth, and to this day I wonder what it would've been like to have her around. Would we have gotten along? Would we be more alike than different? I don't dwell on it too much, but the questions will always be there. Even though I don't know her, I miss her and I love her. She's my twin, and nothing will ever change that.

(Sorry if this is redundant...it's late and I should be asleep)

"Can anyone truly know happiness without truly knowing sadness?"
Erm. I'm kinda torn on this one. On one hand, I think it depends on the person's definition of being "truly happy" or "truly sad." What makes one person ecstatic or depressed may not be the same for someone else. On the other hand, adversity can teach you how strong you actually are.

[Geez, this is wordy...and this post is way more personal than I'd intended it to be...-_-...but it illustrates my points.]

Both of those statements are true.
I will not go into major detail, but I remember nothing of my father. He died when I was only 3. All I have of him is some pictures and the stories my family tells me about how great he was.

I never got the chance to truely know my father, and although I love him with all my heart, and I know that he has been by my side my entire life in spirit, it makes me tear up whenever I think about him... mainly b/c... I didn't know him myself.

I love you Dad. Thank you for watching over me.

for the first one, i would agree, like good ol shakespere would...but ive yet to really lose someone that i really love *Knocks on wood* I guess that is my blessing in life so far

for the second thing, its kind of hard to say. No matter what degree of happiness you have, you will always have sadness, which starts right below the most happy thing you can think of. Quite frankly, everyone truely knows sadness...it is what lets us know what happiness is.

That is all

All very valid points. Now that I've given ya'll time to respond, here's what I think.
Point 1. I have loved and lost. And I definately believe that loving and losing is far superior.

I asked the second question because I think it ties in with the first. I am a creature of experience. I don't believe precepts until I know them personally. My whole idea behind that question was that I have this idea that there is a need for comparison in the world. For instance, this very question. I think that in order to know true happiness, you need to be hurt once at least. It's like dating in highschool. If you date in high school just to date around then I believe that is you gaining experience for when you find that special someone. Of course all of what I say is my own beliefs. I would never try to force my opinion on others, I was merely looking for an adult conversation.

Thanks
Excel

The Ultimate Question is "What do you get when you multiply six by seven?"

According to Douglas Adams, anyway.

For I have loved and lost and loved again, I say that yup, loving and losing is the best. Whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger Wink Most of the time it's a matter of time before you end up actually being stronger from a loss ... but in the end, we're all winners! Or losers ... but err, depends of how you see death and all and ... Are you sure 6 by 7 equals 2? ^^;;
