Ha, I say. A child? Perhaps. Indeed, that's one of the best analogies I've ever heard.
Just starting to comprehend Right and Wrong? I'd have to say no.
Humanity has a natural sense of right and wrong. In the oldest, most "primative" of societies we see a complex social code that almost always follows a few universal rules. The ancient religions display an unknown depth of metaphor and meaning that almost all current religions lack. The structure of the ancient social systems was as simple and easy as anything you could possibly think up, making perfect sense to those that existed within it. These days you'd be lucky to find anyone in any given country that totally understood their own political system.
No, I say unto thee, we know Right and Wrong. We have known it, and we always will know it. We just chose to IGNORE it. In this sense I'd say your analogy is right on the money. If we are a child then we are a petty child, because long ago we saw that we had the power to take over everything on this amazing world of ours, that we had the potential to corrupt or destroy everything that stood in the way of our total domination. The only thing that prevented it was Right and Wrong. So we ignored it. We murdered our brothers, we mowed down the forests and we bent the animals to our will despite a thousand year old tradition to respect all living things. You need only to look into the rituals of ancient totem animals, the sacred rite of the hunt, and the worship of the Goddess of the Earth and Crops to know that we used to know Rightousness and respect for all things that lived upon our planet. But there came a time when one people said they wanted more. Craving power they began their rampage upon the world and the rest of us had to conform to this new, terrible way, or be utterly destroyed. This same story is still happenning today. You can see it with the way that larger countries force small countries to emulate them. You can see it with the near-blatant piracy of Capitalism upon the world economy and the world ecology. We know Right and Wrong, but we decided to ignore it long ago and now we will pay. We will either die with this planet, clinging to the last resources, bewildered with thoughts of how it could come to such an end, or we will break free of this planet, find others and corrupt them as well. We will do this until one day there shall come from the unnamed ranks a voice of dissent, a voice that speaks against the rampant greed that has taken our race. And this voice will raise others, and still others, till all speak in the same tone, a universal harmony that shall ring the heavens. Then shall we be redeemed. Not before.
Still, I love that analogy about the Child. Very good.
