Now, see, call me a prude, but I really think we need to get things on Earth fixed up before we even think about going someplace else. What good is it going to do us if we just keep devouring planets without learning from our mistakes?

if we are "decendents" then here would be my theory.

I don't think that the martians "came over" to earth. They were probably killed off by something similar to what caused the ice age. But, it is possible that before life on earth, there may have been something large enough to hit both planets. it picked something up from mars and that something hit earth and began the evolutionary process.

it's a long shot, but it could be.

Actually that's along the lines of what MANY scientists think. Like there's some central planet out there hurling cells into space or something.

It would be cool to see the place, for sure, and all this talk about water and such is very exciting. But, when I first heard G.W.B. saying that he wanted to send people there my gut reaction was: "Wait, wait, wait. You've totally jacked up our economy, putting us into debt with numbers so high that most of us have only heard their names maybe once or twice in our lives and you want to create a program that will cost billions of dollars and have absolutely no redeeming economic or social value?"
Dude's cracked.
Also, that's an interesting idea, Shino. The chances, however, of something large enough hitting Mars with enough force to take some of it with it, and then continue on it's path and then smack into Earth with all the microbes taken from Mars remaining intact through the extremes of heat from reentry and cold from the depths of space are slim. However, the idea does have some merit. Lots of scientists believe that a big something plowed into Earth a while ago, the effect of which created the moon. It's possible that this same something was, in some way, from Mars and carried something to prompt life. Who knows? We may find out that there was never any life on Mars, anyway.

When was this? In all the articles that I've read it's said the Opprotunity and Spirit weren't looking for life, nor were they designed to find it, just to look for signs of water.
